The Assistant Superintendent plays a key role in overseeing daily field operations on commercial construction projects, working closely with the Superintendent and project team to ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, and to high quality standards. This full-time, field-based position in Sunset Beach, NC offers hands-on experience across multiple trades, exposure to all phases of ground-up construction, and a clear pathway for professional growth into superintendent and project management roles.

Responsibilities
  • Perform hands-on construction work across multiple trades to support daily project activities and maintain productivity on the jobsite.
  • Assist the Superintendent with coordinating subcontractors, field crews, and site logistics to keep work flowing efficiently.
  • Support short-term planning efforts, including developing and maintaining look-ahead schedules and task sequencing for crews.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, staging, and storage to ensure the right materials are available on site when needed and the jobsite remains organized.
  • Monitor jobsite safety conditions daily and help enforce OSHA and company safety standards, including hazard recognition and corrective actions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional construction site environment, ensuring walkways, work areas, and storage locations are orderly.
  • Assist with quality control efforts by inspecting workmanship, verifying compliance with project standards, and helping manage punch lists.
  • Read and review construction drawings, plans, specifications, submittals, and project documents to support scope understanding and coordination.
  • Help coordinate permits, inspections, and required project approvals with local authorities and third-party inspectors.
  • Assist with owner, architect, and inspector walkthroughs and site meetings, providing field updates and addressing questions about progress and quality.
  • Support project scheduling efforts by tracking progress, identifying potential delays, and helping adjust workflows to maintain critical path milestones.
  • Coordinate daily jobsite activities, including crew assignments, equipment usage, and sequencing of trades to minimize conflicts and downtime.
  • Manage or support subcontractor coordination by monitoring performance, addressing field issues, and ensuring adherence to safety and quality requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing safety, quality, and construction management training to continuously improve technical and leadership capabilities.
  • Develop leadership skills by taking initiative in field problem-solving, mentoring team members, and occasionally leading small crews or tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with superintendents, subcontractors, owners, architects, inspectors, and project team members to resolve issues and keep stakeholders informed.
  • Assist with project closeout activities, including punch list completion, final inspections, and preparation of turnover documentation.
  • Support documentation and record-keeping related to field activities, including daily logs, photos, reports, and other project records.
  • Identify jobsite issues proactively and escalate them to project leadership, offering potential solutions to maintain safety, quality, and schedule.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented culture by building and maintaining positive working relationships with diverse project stakeholders.
Essential Skills
  • Basic construction knowledge with the ability to understand commercial construction processes, methods, materials, and terminology.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Assistant Superintendent, preferably on commercial construction projects.
  • 1–3 years of experience in commercial construction, field operations, construction management, skilled trades, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience managing project timelines and helping keep work on schedule in a fast-paced jobsite environment.
  • Experience overseeing subcontractors and supporting subcontractor coordination in the field, including crews, schedules, and daily activities.
  • Ability to support project scheduling, including look-ahead schedules, task sequencing, and basic understanding of critical path concepts.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, specifications, submittals, and other project documents.
  • Basic ability to read construction drawings with growing proficiency in blueprint and specification reading.
  • Working knowledge of commercial construction methods, materials, means, and sequencing.
  • OSHA 10 Construction certification and a strong commitment to enforcing jobsite safety standards and OSHA regulations.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA safety requirements, hazard recognition, and safety compliance practices.
  • Ability to perform physical jobsite work and spend extended time on active construction sites, including indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Capability to sit, stand, walk, climb, crawl, kneel, crouch, reach, grasp, pull, lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely, and navigate uneven terrain.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with project teams, subcontractors, clients, owners, architects, and inspectors.
  • Organizational skills to assist with planning, documentation, and coordination of field activities, including time management and record-keeping.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality, safety, and schedule expectations.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn, develop leadership skills, and take on increasing responsibility within field operations.
  • Basic working knowledge of IT systems and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and reliable transportation to assigned jobsites.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent as a minimum education requirement.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in commercial construction environments such as hotels, gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants.
  • Experience with ground-up construction projects, including multi-story construction and post-tension concrete.
  • Familiarity with managing site logistics and coordinating material deliveries and staging.
  • Exposure to safety-focused work environments and adherence to OSHA and company safety policies.
  • CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain these credentials.
  • OSHA 30 certification or willingness to obtain, enhancing safety leadership on the jobsite.
  • Experience working across multiple construction trades, providing broad field knowledge and versatility.
  • Leadership potential demonstrated by prior experience leading small crews, mentoring team members, or serving in a foreman or lead role.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with clients, subcontractors, inspectors, and project teams.
  • Familiarity with project management platforms such as Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam, PlanGrid, or similar construction technology.
  • Proficiency with construction management tools and documentation practices, including daily logs and reports.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field preferred but not required.
  • Interest in long-term growth within field leadership roles such as Superintendent or Project Management, supported by continuous learning and professional development.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors, vendors, or field crews, including schedules and daily jobsite activities.
  • Ability to identify and communicate jobsite issues proactively to project leadership and collaborate on solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build productive relationships and contribute to a team-oriented culture.
  • Familiarity with quality control processes, including inspecting workmanship, managing punch lists, and ensuring compliance with project standards.
  • Comfort working with construction documents, including drawings, specifications, submittals, and project records.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing safety, quality, and construction management training and company-sponsored development programs.
Work Environment

This is a full-time, non-exempt, field-based role located in Sunset Beach, NC, typically working Monday through Friday for approximately 40–45 hours per week, with overtime available as requested. The Assistant Superintendent works primarily on active indoor and outdoor commercial construction job sites, experiencing varying weather conditions, elevated noise levels, dust, and operating equipment. The position requires regular travel to assigned job sites and occasional travel for training or company meetings. The physical environment involves frequent walking, standing, climbing, crawling, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, pulling, and safely lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds while navigating uneven terrain. The role is embedded in a fast-paced commercial construction setting that combines field supervision with hands-on project involvement, working closely with Superintendents, subcontractors, project teams, and clients to keep projects safe, on schedule, and within quality standards. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
