Overview:
Our client, an engineering firm specializing in renewable energy, water, and environmental solutions, is seeking a Senior Fisheries Engineering Consultant to lead multidisciplinary teams delivering complex fish passage projects across the U.S. and Canada. This role performs and manages structural, civil, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical design for fisheries facilities, including fishways and hatcheries. Responsibilities include reviewing analyses and designs, identifying improvements, and serving as an in-house technical expert through mentoring and knowledge sharing, while collaborating on hydropower, renewable energy, and ecological restoration projects nationwide. This is a highly senior, hands?on technical role requiring deep, direct experience performing and leading fisheries engineering design.This is a hybrid, full-time position based in Portland, OR.
Responsibilities:
- Lead multi-disciplinary teams of engineers and scientists in the delivery of fish passage projects and potentially assist in business development and client management activities.
- Perform and/or manage structural, civil, hydraulic, and mechanical design tasks in support of fisheries engineering projects across the USA and Canada.
- Personally perform and lead complex fisheries engineering design and analysis, with responsibility for technical decisions rather than primarily assigning or overseeing work.
- Join a team of technical professionals working on fisheries, hydropower, renewable energy, and ecological restoration projects in the U.S. and Canada.
- Review analyses and designs to identify areas for improvement and omissions, providing feedback to others.
- Serve as an in-house expert, advising on multiple specialties, and share expertise with the firm through memos, staff meetings, lunchtime seminars, and mentoring.
- Incorporate the skills of structural, civil, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical engineering in the fields of fish passage, fish hatcheries, and related facilities design, with the support and mentorship of senior engineering advisors and principal engineers.
Requirements:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license with a BSCE or MS degree
- Must possess and maintain a P.E. or be committed to getting licensed within a year (P.Eng. is a bonus) and be able to add other state/provincial licenses as required
- 16 years of experience in fisheries or a closely related field
- Experience designing and managing fisheries projects (e.g., technical fishways, hatcheries, floating surface collectors, and/or downstream passage) required
- Expert?level, hands?on experience personally performing fisheries engineering design and analysis on complex projects; experience focused primarily on task delegation or oversight is not sufficient for this role.
- Knowledge of standards and codes applicable to fisheries engineering and related disciplines required
- Preferred specialty in structural, mechanical, hydraulics, or civil engineering
- Experience laying out and designing fishway projects as part of a multi-discipline (e.g., civil, structural, hydraulics, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical engineering) team
- Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team while applying engineering skills from analysis and design through to construction
- Experience working with clients, agencies, and contractors during planning and construction of projects
- Ability to work in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, and/or MEP preferred
- Construction experience, fish hatchery experience, nature-like fishway experience, and design drawing development is a plus
- Familiarity with regulatory and permitting processes for fisheries engineering projects is a plus
- Experience collaborating with regulators and biologists is a plus
- Must possess permanent authorization to work in the United States and be able to acquire authorization to work in Canada when project needs dictate
- Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver’s license
