Field Network Technician III

Position Summary:

Configure, Install, Service and Maintain all last mile and customer premise equipment necessary for the delivery of Commercial Metro Ethernet and Metro Transport. This includes all equipment; both active and passive, between the core network and customer demarc. Network Technician will be assigned company truck and test gear and report to an operations manager. This position calls for occasional work in night maintenance windows. Travel is expected, some overnight travel is required, occasional on-call weeks.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Test and validate all new circuits, hardware and connections for proper configuration and performance.
  • Trouble shoot commercial circuits at the direction of CNOC or Network engineers to resolve issues such as but not limited to Low levels, loss of signal, High BER, Packet Loss, Mis-Balanced DWDM systems (non-ROADM), FDV and latency issues.
  • At the direction of NOC, Design Engineers, or Network Engineers, trouble shoot commercial circuits using any of the following test equipment as required –
  • OTDR (must be able to read and convey readings to construction or NOC)
  • Optical power meter
  • Ethernet Test Set (layer 2 & 3; JDSU, EXFO)
  • Provision at the shelf level using Craft Interfaces.
  • Provision MetroNID and EtherNIDs at the direction of Network Design or Network Engineering.
  • Ensure all fibers, cables and other connections are properly tagged and identified and that these connections have the proper physical support such as fiber duct, spiral wrap and strand relief supports.
  • Ensure all equipment is mounted in such a way as to ensure network reliability.
  • Assist with the installation, service and maintenance of core switches, routers, SONET transport, DWDM and other related equipment as necessary and directed.
  • As part of an on-call/standby rotation, respond to afterhours call-out for service restoration, troubleshooting, network testing and repair of all last mile and customer premise equipment necessary for the delivery of Metro Ethernet and Metro Transport. Ensure the Customer Support Team is kept up to date on the progress of all repair and upgrade activities. Also assist Network Engineers in troubleshooting, testing and repair of all core switches, routers, SONET Transport, DWDM and other related equipment as necessary and directed.
  • Maintain all spare stock for all last mile and customer premise equipment necessary for the delivery of Commercial Metro Ethernet and Metro Transport;
  • Maintain proficiency in trouble shooting techniques and the use of test equipment such as optical power meters, OTDRs, Optical Spectrum Analyzers, Ethernet Sniffer and Ethernet test equipment.

Job Requirements:

  • Associates Degree in computer networking or telecommunications infrastructure is preferred but not required. Real world experience in network troubleshooting and customer relations is also preferred. Real world experience in Metro Ethernet delivery. High School Diploma/GED or Equivalent required.
  • Hands on experience with the Cisco XPE, Cisco 15310-CL, Telco Systems T-MARC, Accedian EtherNID and MetroNID and MetroNode, Fujitsu (FW 4100, 4500,9500), Netsmart Craft Interface, CWDM Couplers, Ciena Core Director, Cienna 2916, 5171, 6500 & 6200, Cyan Z-series & Craft interfaces.
  • Solid understanding of the following:
  • DC Power
  • RFC2544 Turn-up testing
  • ITU-T T.1564 Turn-up testing
  • Basic knowledge of telco standards is required, cable counts, creating fittings, terminating cable and running cable is preferred.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in network troubleshooting techniques.
  • Thorough understanding of Metro Ethernet transport including IP subnetting, nating, domain controllers, VLANS, Q&Q, dot1q tunnels, COS, CDP, VTP, and related subjects.
  • Must be able to efficiently operate such test equipment as optical power meters, OTDR, Optical Spectrum Analyzers, and Ethernet and test equipment.
  • Basic understanding of Metro Ethernet
  • Transport protocols such as MPLS, VPLS, RPR, SONET and similar network protocols.
  • Basic understanding of OSPF and BGP routing.
  • CCNA is preferred.
  • A Certification is preferred.
  • Fiber Splicing experience is a plus not required.
  • MEF CECP Certification preferred.
  • Three to five years’ experience in network troubleshooting is required. Such experience should include experience in network troubleshooting, Ethernet routing, CWDM technologies, DWDM technologies.
  • Proficient with MS Excel
  • Excellent Communication Skills
  • Valid State Driver’s license w/ excellent driving record

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $29.00 - $35.00 per hour
