What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Tax Manager position at Ackerman CPAs, LLC?
Ackerman CPAs | Louisville, KY | Hybrid
Base Salary: $140,000–$190,000 | CPA Required
Ackerman CPAs is a growing Louisville CPA firm serving closely held businesses, real estate investors, business owners, and high-net-worth individuals.
We're looking for an experienced Senior Tax Manager to join our leadership team as a reviewer, advisor, mentor, and client relationship manager.
This is not simply another tax compliance role. You'll work directly with the firm's partners, advise clients on complex tax matters, develop our team, and have a meaningful voice in how we build the firm for the future.
If you've built a strong career in public accounting but want more autonomy, closer client relationships, fewer layers, and greater influence, we'd like to meet you.
Many experienced tax professionals eventually reach a point where they want more ownership over their work without giving up the resources, compensation, and professional challenges of public accounting.
At Ackerman CPAs, you'll have the opportunity to:
- Work directly with the firm's partners in an environment where good ideas can quickly become action
- Serve as a trusted advisor rather than simply reviewing returns
- Manage a portfolio of meaningful, long-term client relationships
- Mentor and develop tax professionals
- Help shape our technology, processes, workflow, and client service model
- Focus on quality and relationships rather than simply maximizing return volume
We're intentionally building a firm where talented professionals can do excellent work, make an impact, and build a sustainable long-term career.
As a Senior Tax Manager, you'll work closely with the firm's partners and tax team while serving as a primary advisor to many of our clients.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Review complex federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, and S corporations
- Lead proactive tax planning and consulting for closely held businesses, business owners, real estate investors, and high-net-worth individuals
- Serve as a primary point of contact and trusted advisor for client relationships
- Research complex tax matters and develop practical, client-focused recommendations
- Review workpapers and ensure accurate, high-quality deliverables
- Mentor, coach, and develop tax staff
- Assist with notices, examinations, and other taxing authority matters
- Work directly with firm leadership to improve processes, technology, workflow, and client service
This is primarily a technical leadership, client service, and people-development role. A pre-existing book of business is not required.
- Active CPA license
- 8 years of public accounting tax experience
- Significant experience reviewing individual and business tax returns
- Strong technical tax research and planning skills
- Experience managing client relationships
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to mentor and lead other professionals
- Experience serving closely held businesses and their owners
- Strong tax planning and advisory experience
- Experience with partnerships, S corporations, real estate, and high-net-worth individuals
- Experience supervising and developing tax staff
- Experience with CCH Axcess or similar tax software
- Comfort adopting modern workflow, automation, and AI tools
- Base salary of $140,000–$190,000, depending on experience, technical capabilities, and leadership responsibilities
- 401(k) with employer contribution
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 4 weeks paid time off
- Hybrid work environment
- Continuing education and professional development support
- CPA licensing and professional dues reimbursement
This is a Louisville-based hybrid position.
We generally work together in our Louisville office 3–4 days per week, with flexibility based on team, client, and individual needs.
We value in-person collaboration, but we also believe experienced professionals should have flexibility in how they manage their work.
We believe excellent client service should not require year-round burnout.
Tax season naturally requires additional effort, but we're intentionally building our staffing, workflows, technology, and client base around a sustainable long-term work environment.
Our goal is to keep peak-season workloads around 50–55 hours per week rather than making extreme hours the norm.
We want our professionals to build careers here—not simply survive busy seasons.
This is an important leadership hire for Ackerman CPAs, not simply another layer in the review process.
As the firm grows, we expect this position to grow with it.
For the right person, the role can develop into a Tax Director, Principal, or other senior leadership position, with increasing influence over our tax practice, team development, client strategy, and the direction of the firm.
Ackerman CPAs serves privately owned businesses, real estate investors, business owners, and successful individuals who value proactive advice and long-term relationships.
Our approach is straightforward:
- Quality over volume
- Relationships over transactions
- Proactive planning over reactive compliance
- Long-term growth over short-term thinking
We're investing in technology, automation, and process improvement so our professionals can spend less time fighting inefficient systems and more time solving problems, advising clients, and doing work that requires professional judgment.
We're building a firm where talented people can have real influence without navigating layers of bureaucracy.
If you're an experienced tax professional who wants meaningful client relationships, the opportunity to develop a team, and a real voice in building the future of a growing CPA firm, we'd love to talk.
