The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is responsible for providing basic nursing care to patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or physician. This role involves monitoring patient conditions, administering medications, assisting with medical procedures, and ensuring the comfort and well-being of patients in various healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and home health care.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care & Monitoring:
- Monitor and document patient vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments as directed by a physician or RN.
- Assist with patient hygiene, dressing, grooming, and mobility to ensure patient comfort and dignity.
- Provide basic wound care, including dressing changes, bandaging, and cleaning wounds.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including feeding, bathing, and toileting.
- Monitor patient progress and communicate changes in condition to RNs and physicians.
Medical Procedures:
- Assist RNs and physicians during medical procedures, preparing equipment and ensuring patient comfort.
- Administer intravenous (IV) fluids, injections, and vaccinations under proper supervision.
- Insert and manage catheters and other basic medical equipment, ensuring proper care.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, documenting vital signs, medications, treatments, and observed symptoms.
- Report significant changes in patient conditions to the supervising RN or physician.
- Document patient care activities, including response to medications and treatments.
Patient Education:
- Provide basic health education to patients and families, including instructions for medication administration, dietary restrictions, and self-care routines.
- Offer emotional support to patients, answering questions and providing reassurance during treatments.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Collaborate with RNs, physicians, and other healthcare team members to develop and implement care plans.
- Communicate clearly with patients, families, and team members to ensure comprehensive care.
- Attend and participate in care plan meetings and team huddles as required.
Infection Control & Safety:
- Follow infection control guidelines and maintain a sterile environment for patient procedures.
- Assist in maintaining a safe and clean patient environment to prevent the spread of infection.
- Adhere to safety protocols in all aspects of patient care.
Patient Advocacy:
- Act as an advocate for patient needs, ensuring comfort, dignity, and privacy.
- Provide compassionate care, addressing concerns and offering emotional support during hospital stays or treatments.

Qualifications:Skills & Qualifications:
- Education: Completion of an accredited LVN/LPN program.
- Licensing: Active and valid LVN license issued by the state nursing board.
- Experience: Previous experience as an LVN or in a healthcare setting preferred, but not always required.
