Sewing Machine Operator

WHAT WE DO

We build large-format trade show displays and exhibits for live events. All graphic printing, cutting, sewing, and finishing is done in-house. Our sewing department finishes wide-format printed polyester fabric — hemming, zippers, velcro, pole pockets, silicone edge beading, reinforced seams, etc. Our finished graphics end up in front of thousands of people at trade shows across the country.

Our production facility is clean, well-lit, and climate-controlled. We currently have a four-person sewing department. No piecework quotas, no repetitive assembly-lines. Every job and every day is a little different.

What you'll be doing

• Operating industrial single-needle and double-needle lockstitch machines
• Sewing hems, zippers, velcro, edge beading, pole pockets, etc on printed polyester material
• Working from job tickets and defined specs to hit exact finished dimensions
• Handling large panels — some graphics are over 10 feet wide
• Basic machine upkeep: threading, tension adjustment, needle changes, oiling, clearing jams
• Checking your own work for square, straight seams, and clean stitches

The machines you'll run

We want to be specific here, because a lot of qualified people don't realize they already know these machines:

• Juki DDL-5550N — high-speed single-needle lockstitch, drop feed, knee lift. If you've run a DDL-8700, DDL-8300, or any comparable single-needle industrial straight-stitch machine, this is the same machine to you.
• Juki LU-1560N — two-needle walking foot (unison feed) lockstitch with large bobbins, for heavier and multi-layer material. If you've run a walking foot machine in upholstery, auto trim, marine canvas, awnings, tarps, or bags, you'll be at home on this one.

We'll train you on our specific products, materials, and specs. We will not train you from zero on how to run an industrial machine.

What we need from you

Required:

• At least 2 years of hands-on experience on industrial sewing machines — single needle at minimum, walking foot / double needle preferred
• Comfortable threading, adjusting tension, and troubleshooting your own machine
• Able to read a tape measure and hit specified dimensions consistently
• Conversational English. Our floor is bilingual and Spanish is spoken here every day, so you don't need perfect English. But job specs, safety instructions, and production changes come to you in English from supervisors and other departments, and you'll need to ask questions and flag problems in English to work safely and accurately.
• Able to stand, lift up to 40 lbs, and handle large fabric panels

Nice to have:

• Experience with wide-format fabric, banners, tents, awnings, upholstery, or canvas
• Experience with silicone edge (SEG) beading
