Kitten Care Coordinator (Seasonal)

One Part-Time Position

Position Summary

The Kitten Care Coordinator is a seasonal, mission-critical role dedicated to the care, coordination, and placement of neonatal kittens (birth to 8 weeks of age) entering ACCT Philly during peak kitten season. As the primary daytime caretaker for the shelter’s most vulnerable population, the Kitten Care Coordinator ensures consistent, high-quality care while expanding the shelter’s lifesaving capacity through foster training, volunteer support, and community engagement.

This position plays a vital role in reducing neonatal mortality, improving live release rates, and ensuring that every savable kitten has a safe pathway to survival. The Kitten Care Coordinator directly contributes to lives saved—not only through hands-on care, but by expanding the number of trained fosters capable of caring for neonatal kittens year after year. This role is essential to reducing deaths in care, strengthening community partnerships, and ensuring that Philadelphia’s most vulnerable kittens have the chance to thrive.

Key ResponsibilitiesDirect Animal Care

● Provide hands-on daily care for neonatal kittens, including bottle-feeding, slurry feeding, sanitation, weight monitoring, and behavioral observation

● Maintain strict hygiene and biosecurity protocols, including care of kittens in isolation for infectious disease (e.g., panleukopenia)

● Monitor kittens for signs of illness or distress and communicate concerns promptly to medical staff

● Accurately document feeding schedules, weights, medical notes, and placement needs

Foster & Placement Coordination

● Facilitate timely placement of neonatal kittens into foster homes, rescue partners, or overnight care when appropriate

● Support after-hours and end-of-day placement efforts in collaboration with staff, volunteers, and foster networks

● Assist with intake triage and ensure continuity of care for kittens arriving outside of standard hours

● Assist foster team with photos, videos, and other promotional materials to ensure timely kitten placement

Training & Capacity Building

● Train and mentor new and existing foster caregivers in neonatal care, including feeding techniques, hygiene, and emergency response

● Provide hands-on demonstrations and ongoing support to build foster confidence and retention

● Assist with volunteer education related to neonatal kitten handling and care

Community Engagement & Outreach

● Support and participate in kitten showers, foster trainings, and volunteer workshops

● Serve as a knowledgeable, approachable resource for members of the public participating in programs such as the Milkman Program, designed to train members of the public in overnight kitten feeding and care

● Collaborate with staff, rescue partners, and veterinarians to strengthen community lifesaving efforts

Nursery Care & Resource Management

● Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kitten nursery environment through daily cleaning and sanitation

● Provide age-appropriate enrichment and socialization for kittens and mother cats to support healthy development and stress reduction

● Organize and maintain nursery spaces, ensuring supplies are properly stored and accessible

● Stock and monitor nursery and kitten supply shelves; notify Lifesaving Supervisor when inventory is low

● Prepare and assemble kitten care kits and supply kits for foster caregivers to support successful placement and ongoing care

Qualifications

● Experience caring for neonatal kittens (professional, volunteer, or foster experience required)

● Strong understanding of neonatal feeding, hygiene, and developmental needs

● Ability to remain calm, organized, and compassionate in a fast-paced, high-volume shelter environment

● Strong communication and teaching skills, with the ability to support and empower community members

● Comfortable working weekends, holidays, and during peak intake periods

● Ability to lift, clean, and perform physically demanding tasks associated with animal care

Education and Experience

● At least 6 months of previous shelter, rescue, or veterinary experience preferred, specifically with handling and care of neonatal kittens

● Experience training or mentoring volunteers or fosters

Schedule & Duration

● Seasonal position during peak kitten intake months

● One full-time and one part-time role

● The schedule may include weekends and evenings.
