Position Summary
The Port Top Loader Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of top loader equipment used to load, unload, transport, and stack containers, cargo, and heavy materials within the terminal. This position plays a critical role in maintaining terminal productivity while adhering to all safety regulations, company policies, and port operating procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate a top loader to move, stack, and transport loaded and empty shipping containers within the terminal.
- Load and unload containers from trucks, trailers, chassis, railcars, and storage areas.
- Stack containers in designated yard locations according to operational plans and inventory requirements.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned equipment and report mechanical deficiencies immediately.
- Complete equipment inspection reports and maintain accurate operating logs.
- Follow all terminal operating procedures, traffic patterns, and safety regulations.
- Coordinate with dispatchers, vessel planners, supervisors, crane operators, and truck drivers to ensure efficient cargo movement.
- Assist with vessel loading and unloading operations as assigned.
- Maintain constant awareness of pedestrians, equipment, and surrounding operations while operating heavy machinery.
- Report damaged containers, equipment, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Assist with general terminal operations, cargo handling, housekeeping, and other operational duties when equipment operation is not required.
- Work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency operations as dictated by vessel schedules.
- Participate in safety meetings, training, and emergency response activities.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, Port Authority, Coast Guard, and company safety requirements.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating a Top Loader, Reach Stacker, or similar heavy container handling equipment.
- Experience working in a marine terminal, port, intermodal, or container yard preferred.
- Knowledge of container handling operations and terminal safety practices.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of safety and accuracy.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Basic mechanical knowledge is preferred.
Pay: $30.00 per hour
