General Description
The purpose of this position is to support and deliver school-based and after-school health education and tutoring services. The role also involves facilitating a variety of activity-based, interactive nutrition and fitness education initiatives through community outreach efforts aimed at promoting wellness across the Absentee Shawnee Tribe service area. This position operates under the supervision of the Diabetes and Wellness, and Public Health Program Directors. Regular attendance, strong communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and a passion for health education are essential. The incumbent must be able to work a flexible, non-traditional schedule based on program needs. Continuation of this position is contingent upon the ongoing availability of grant funding.
Responsibilities & Duties
  • Develop and implement diabetes prevention programs for youth, focusing on positive health and nutrition outcomes through school policy, systems, and environmental changes, as well as after-school programs, camps, and community activities.
  • Lead and actively participate in healthful food selection and tasting activities with both youth and adults to promote informed nutritional choices.
  • Facilitate and engage in physical activity sessions alongside youth and adults to encourage active lifestyles.
  • Track learner progress and measure program impact using pre- and post-assessments, along with all required documentation and reports as outlined by the Tribal department.
  • Assist in the development of science-based educational materials and/or utilize existing research-based resources to support effective delivery of health education to youth and adults.
  • Collaborate with the Tribal school system and other community partners to organize and deliver nutrition and physical activity events, including day camps, field trips, and health fairs for eligible individuals.
  • Coordinate and support the planning and execution of educational events.
  • Partner with community organizations, including but not limited to NYPD, OIDC, and POGO, to enhance outreach and program effectiveness.
  • Provide assistance to the Wellness and Public Health teams with events, promotions, and other initiatives as needed.
  • Support the Fitness Specialist with program activities and responsibilities as required.
  • Assist patients with fitness routines under the supervision of the Lead Fitness Specialist, ensuring safe and effective participation.
  • Deliver physical activity lessons and/or cooking demonstrations at community and health sites as needed.
  • Travel to off-site locations outside of the assigned workstation when necessary to fulfill program duties.
  • Maintain strictest confidentiality; adhere to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
  • Conduct self in accordance with AST administrative manual.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education Requirements and Qualifications
Education and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Family and Consumer Science Nutrition, Education Public Health or related field preferred.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with elementary-aged youth or in a Tribal Youth Program.
  • Experience in curriculum and program development preferred.
  • Experience participating in community based research preferred.
  • Experience working in Tribal communities preferred.
  • Current CPR certification or willingness to obtain upon hire is required.
  • Current ServSafe certification or willingness to obtain upon hire is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of accepted standards in community nutrition and health promotion principles and theories.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate teaching and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of safety and risk management principles and protocols.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • Consistently punctual, prepared, and professional.
  • Skilled in public speaking.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respect diverse lifestyles, healing methods, and practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Must be computer literate required (Windows operating systems – Microsoft Word, Excel).
  • Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, or walking; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, and stooping; good finger dexterity and sensory perception; frequent repetitive motions; as well as talking, hearing, and visual acuity are required.
  • Frequent lifting (up to 15 lbs)
  • Occasional lifting (up to 50 lbs)
  • Must be physically able to navigate stairs, rough terrain, and varied environments such as homes, schools, health centers, and community facilities. Work involves driving in rural and congested areas, requiring awareness of risks and adherence to safety precautions.
