Description

This role is responsible for the entire build process, from the physical layout and mounting of components to the complex point-to-point wiring and final quality assurance testing. Success in this position requires a deep understanding of electrical principles, a commitment to safety and quality standards, and an exceptional eye for detail. 


Key Responsibilities


Panel Fabrication and Mechanical Layout

  • Interpret mechanical layout drawings and electrical schematics to precisely position and mount components within enclosures. 
  • Perform all necessary enclosure modifications, including drilling, tapping, and cutting openings for conduits, switches, and HMIs using hand and power tools. 
  • Ensure all components are laid out logically, providing proper clearance for wiring, maintenance, and ventilation in accordance with NEC and UL 508A standards. 
  • Lay out and affix terminal blocks, wire ducts, DIN rail, and other hardware. 
  • Provide feedback to the engineering team on how to make the design more manufacturable or cost effective. 

Electrical Assembly and Wiring

  • Execute complex point-to-point wiring of all electrical components, including PLCs, VFDs, motor starters, relays, power supplies, and control devices, based on detailed schematics. 
  • Ensure all wiring is routed neatly, organized in wire ducts, and properly bundled and labeled for clarity and serviceability. 
  • Select appropriate wire gauges and colors according to specifications and industry standards. 
  • Perform all wire terminations correctly, ensuring secure crimps and connections using calibrated hand tools. 

Quality Assurance and System Testing

  • Conduct thorough in-process and final quality checks to ensure the panel is built exactly to print. 
  • Perform point-to-point continuity testing using a multimeter to verify all wiring is correct and free of shorts. 
  • Conduct power-on tests to ensure the panel functions as designed, verifying indicator lights, switches, and basic I/O functionality. 
  • Identify and document any discrepancies between the build and the schematics, creating "as-built" red-line markups for the engineering team. 

Safety and Workplace Organization

  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) when applicable. 
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times. 
  • Properly use and maintain all hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment. 
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and engineers regarding project status, material needs, or any quality concerns. 

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience building and wiring industrial control panels in a manufacturing or panel shop environment. ?  
  • Proven ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings. ?  
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools used in panel building (e.g., wire strippers, crimpers, drills, jigsaws, knockout punches). ?  
  • Strong understanding of basic electrical theory and common control components (relays, contactors, breakers, PLCs, VFDs). 
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, error-free work. ? 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or certificate in Electronics Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related technical field. 
  • Direct experience working in a UL 508A certified panel shop. 
  • Working knowledge of UL 508A and National Electrical Code (NEC) standards as they apply to panel construction. 
  • Experience with Allen Bradley, Siemens, or similar PLC and drive platforms. 
  • Forklift license or experience operating material handling equipment. 
  • Industry-recognized certification, such as the SACA Certified Industrial Control Panel Technician credential.
