Some Jobs Pay the Bills. This One Pays You Back.

Picture this: a kid who barely spoke to anyone in September high-fives you in March because you helped him land his first joke that actually made the group laugh. That’s not a highlight reel moment. That’s a Tuesday at ABLE.

We’re looking for a Support Mentor who wants more out of a job than a paycheck —someone ready to show up, dig in, and help youth and young adults with special needs build the confidence, friendships, and skills that carry them for life.

Why This Job Is Different
You won’t find “supervision” in our job title, because that’s not what we do.
We don’t babysit. We don’t just watch the clock. We mentor. We teach. We celebrate everywin, big or small, like it’s the biggest news of the day — because for the person who earned it, it is.

If you’re the kind of person who gets excited about someone else’s progress, you already have what it takes.

What You'll Experience
No two afternoons look the same. One day you’re leading a game that has the whole room cracking up. The next, you’re helping someone practice a conversation they’ve been nervous to have. Some days you’re out in the community — a museum, a park, a local event— showing participants that the world is theirs to explore too.

You’ll see participants:

  • Try something new and surprise themselves
  • Make a friend they didn’t expect to make
  • Practice a skill until it clicks
  • Feel proud of themselves, maybe for the first time that week
  • And you’ll be the person standing next to them when it happens.

What You'll Do

  • Support youth and young adults with special needs and mental health diagnoses during planned programs and activities
  • Help build social, emotional, and life skills through everyday moments, not just lesson plans
  • Get creative — turn ordinary activities into wins participants remember
  • Step up and provide steady support if a participant is having a hard moment
  • Keep spaces clean, safe, and welcoming
  • Communicate clearly with your team and document what matters
  • Build genuine, professional relationships with participants and their support teams
  • Have fun. Seriously — it’s part of the job description.

Why People Love Working Here
Our team sticks together. You’ll get real training (not just a binder to skim), leaders who actually check in with you, and coworkers who show up for each other. We celebrate wins as a team, learn from the tough days together, and keep growing — because standing still isn’t really our style.

This job also looks great on a resume. Whether you’re headed toward education, special education, social work, psychology, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nursing, or human services, you’ll walk away with real, hands-on experience that classroom time can’t teach.

Who Thrives at ABLE
You might be a perfect fit if you're:

  • Studying education, special education, psychology, social work, human services, recreation, occupational therapy, or nursing
  • A teacher, paraprofessional, camp counselor, or youth ministry leader
  • A young professional looking for work that actually means something
  • A parent returning to the workforce, ready to make an impact
  • Someone to wants purpose, not just a punch clock

If you read all that and thought “that’s me” — keep reading.
