What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Statutory Accounting position at Ability Insurance Company?
Ability Insurance Company is seeking a seasoned and strategic insurance finance professional to support the continued growth and evolution of our insurance platform. This senior leadership role will focus on end-to-end balance sheet management across legacy in-force and new business.
The Director will lead a broad spectrum of financial functions, including:
- Oversight of statutory financial statements (Blue Book) and regulatory filings
- Capital and liquidity management
- Reinsurance Transactions
- Financial planning and analysis
- Expense management
- Support for M&A transactions and other strategic initiatives
This is a high-impact role requiring deep technical expertise, strong leadership, and the ability to operate in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
- Minimum 15 years of finance experience in the insurance industry, including progressively senior leadership roles
Technical Expertise
- Extensive knowledge of U.S. statutory accounting for insurance and reinsurance; familiarity with U.S. GAAP
- Hands-on experience preparing full Blue Book statutory statements
- In-depth understanding of reinsurance structures, including funds held and modco arrangements
- Knowledge of statutory investment accounting, including:
- Private credit, ABS, CLOs
- Commercial mortgages, equities, and real estate
- Proven ability to calculate and project Risk-Based Capital (RBC) ratios
- Strong experience in financial forecasting, budgeting, and M&A due diligence for life insurance entities
Product Knowledge
- Deep familiarity with annuity products, particularly Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities (MYGAs) and Fixed Indexed Annuities (FIAs)
- Broader experience across other insurance lines is a plus, including:
- Long-Term Care (LTC)
- Preneed and Final Expense insurance
Leadership & Communication
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and lead multiple initiatives under tight deadlines, maintaining a high level of precision and urgency
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record of engaging with executive leadership
- Effective cross-functional collaborator with strong project management skills
- Track record of building and maintaining high-performing finance teams
