What Does a Direct Support Professional (DSP) Do?

As a DSP, Caregiver, Direct Care Worker, Community Support Professional, Residential Support Staff member, or Care Provider, you will support individuals in achieving greater independence while promoting dignity, choice, and community inclusion.

Responsibilities Include:

- Building meaningful relationships with individuals receiving services

- Providing companionship and emotional support

- Encouraging participation in hobbies, recreational activities, and community events

- Assisting with daily living activities including hygiene, meal preparation, and household tasks

- Supporting the development of independent living skills

- Assisting with personal care when needed

- Providing transportation to appointments, activities, and community events

- Helping individuals achieve personal goals

- Maintaining a safe, clean, and comfortable living environment

- Documenting services and tracking progress

- Following all health and safety procedures

- Participating in Paid Training and continuing education opportunities

- Promoting independence, confidence, and community integration

Qualifications

- Must be at least 18 years of age

- High School Diploma or GED required

- Valid Driver's License required

- Ability to pass required background checks

- Basic computer skills

- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions

- Ability to assist individuals with daily activities and perform physical aspects of the job as needed

- Positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills

No Experience? That's Okay.
