AARP’s Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. It delivers on AARP’s social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues that help give people financial and health security.

Are you a creative, passionate, and results-driven student interested in research and communications and learning more about the advocacy space? The Core Office of the Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer is looking for you! Our team supports the Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer in day-to-day activities, issues, and deliverables. We'll challenge you to think and work innovatively on real-world projects. AARP is committed to your growth and cultivating your continued learning and development. This paid internship has an anticipated start date of Summer 2026. with the possibility of extending additional semesters.

Responsibilities

This internship includes but is not limited to research, drafting communications, and other duties as assigned. As an intern, you will gain valuable work experience and have the opportunity to participate in and expand your knowledge of the communication process.

  • Work closely with the Core Office of the Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer’s staff to support the EVP with timely research analysis and briefings
  • Prepare materials utilizing PowerPoint, Word documents, and Excel spreadsheets
  • Gather research and compile information on various topics; this could include communications with fellow interns & subject matter experts, online searches, reviewing publications, and accessing library materials
  • Compose communication materials and support the EVP’s speechwriter with background research
  • Maintain confidentiality of all AARP’s internal information

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university, rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship, or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program
  • Exceptional verbal/written communication skills
  • Must be a self-starter and adaptable to work under tight deadlines
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Regular and reliable job attendance
  • Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships
  • Independent judgment in evaluation options to make sound decisions

Hybrid Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.

Compensation And Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
