Job purpose
The Shelter Support staff is responsible for maintaining a safe and supportive environment for shelter residents. This position assists with in-person response, shelter operations, responds to crisis calls, and general administration
Duties and responsibilities
- Provide support and advocacy to residents, including crisis counseling and safety planning.
- Answer the 24-hour crisis hotline, conducting intakes and offering referrals.
- Transport residents to and from scheduled appointments.
- Assist shelter residents with daily living activities, orienting them to the use of shelter facilities and appliances.
- Assist shelter residents with move-in and exit process, complete intake/exit paperwork, and review shelter policies.
- Document and maintain client records per appropriate standards and regulations.
- Organize indoor and outdoor group activities for shelter residents.
- Perform daily operational tasks, including light cleaning, restocking supplies, and managing donations.
- Complete other duties and related projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to effectively perform the responsibilities outlined above.
Education & Experience:
- Highschool Diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of, or ability to complete the California state mandated 40-hour Domestic Violence Assistance training.
- Six months or more customer service experience in an office setting.
- Previous experience working in a shelter environment or with survivors of gender-based violence or trauma is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Ability to work independently.
- Experience using Microsoft Office.
- This position may require driving. A valid California driver license, current personal auto insurance, and an MVR sufficient to maintain insurability under agency auto liability policies.
- Fluent in spoken and written English required; Bilingual skills in a second language (particularly Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese) desired but not required.

Working conditions
This job requires you to be in the community. Work is often conducted in a confidential shelter environment. Basic safety precautions and use of protective clothing or gear may be required. Driving is essential to the function of this job. Working with survivors of human trafficking and intimate partner violence may increase exposure to secondary trauma. Evening and weekend work is required.
