DIRECTOR OF NURSING (DON)
State: Missouri
Reports To: Administrator / CEO
Employment Status: Full-Time
License Required: Registered Nurse (RN) – State of Missouri (Active & Unencumbered)
Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of nursing and clinical services. The DON ensures compliance with Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) regulations, CMS Medicare Conditions of Participation, and all applicable federal and state laws while promoting quality, safe, and patient-centered care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Management
- Oversees all nursing services and clinical care delivery
- Ensures comprehensive patient assessments, care planning, and coordination of services
- Reviews and approves Plans of Care, physician orders, and recertifications
- Monitors patient outcomes, infection control, incident reporting, and follow-up actions
- Provides clinical consultation and guidance to nursing staff
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensures agency compliance with:
- Missouri DHSS regulations
- CMS Medicare Conditions of Participation
- HIPAA and confidentiality laws
- Prepares for state surveys, audits, and accreditation reviews
- Conducts clinical record audits to ensure documentation supports medical necessity and billing
- Implements corrective action plans when deficiencies are identified
Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervises and evaluates RNs, LPNs, and other clinical staff
- Conducts competency assessments and annual performance evaluations
- Oversees orientation, in-service training, and ongoing education
- Ensures staff licensure, certifications, background checks, and health requirements remain current
- Participates in hiring, discipline, and termination of clinical staff
Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement (QAPI)
- Develops, implements, and monitors the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program
- Tracks quality indicators, patient satisfaction, and clinical outcomes
- Uses data to identify trends and implement improvement initiatives
Administrative & Leadership Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Administrator on operational planning and staffing needs
- Participates in budgeting and resource allocation for nursing services
- Serves as a clinical liaison between physicians, staff, patients, and families
- Supports referral sources and community partners
Qualifications
Required
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in home health, skilled nursing, or long-term care
- Minimum 1 year of supervisory or leadership experience
- Knowledge of Missouri DHSS regulations and CMS requirements
- Strong documentation, organizational, and communication skills
Preferred
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Experience with Medicare/Medicaid services
- Survey or accreditation experience (ACHC, CARF, Joint Commission)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel to clinical and administrative sites
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
- Prolonged standing, walking, and computer use
