Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the organization’s accounting operations and ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all financial reporting. Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
· Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, cash management, and month-end/year-end close.
· Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
· Manage restricted and unrestricted fund accounting across multiple funding sources (government contracts, grants, donations, and program revenue).
· Support the CFO in budget development, financial forecasting, and variance analysis.
Compliance, Audits & Internal Controls
· Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) for government funding.
· Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors; coordinate annual financial audits and preparation of Form 990.
· Design, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure financial integrity.
· Oversee grant and contract financial reporting, billing, and audits, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Real Estate & Asset Management
· Oversee accounting and reporting for real estate assets, including owned and leased properties.
· Manage fixed asset accounting, depreciation schedules, capital expenditures, and lease accounting.
· Partner with operations and facilities teams on financial aspects of property management and capital projects.
Leadership & Team Development
· Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team; set clear performance expectations and promote continuous improvement.
· Establish efficient workflows, policies, and procedures to support a large, multi-department organization.
· Foster strong cross-functional collaboration with HR, Programs, Development, and Operations.
Systems & Process Improvement
· Oversee financial systems and accounting software; recommend and implement improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
· Drive process improvements and documentation to support organizational growth and evolving compliance requirements.

Qualifications
Required
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
· Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility.
· Demonstrated experience in nonprofit accounting, including fund accounting and government funding compliance.
· Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements.
· Experience managing audits and working directly with external auditors.
· Proven ability to lead and develop teams in a complex organizational environment.
Preferred
· CPA or CMA designation.
· Experience in a mid-to-large nonprofit ($20M budget) or similarly complex organization.
· Experience with real estate or fixed asset–intensive organizations.
· Familiarity with ERP/accounting systems commonly used in nonprofits (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Financial Edge, or similar).
