Architect, Engineering & Construction Director

Salt Lake City, UT, United States

To meet the needs of the Church, we seek to build teams that represent the diverse perspectives, broad life experiences and backgrounds of our global Church membership. With that in mind, we encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

Job Description

This position helps provide and maintain facilities that give Church members places where they can worship, teach, learn, pray together, make and renew covenants, and receive sacred ordinances. Each Church facility that is built and maintained should:

  • Provide a spiritual setting for members to worship
  • Present an image of reverence and dignity in the community

The Director of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) leads a global team responsible for establishing and maintaining the Church’s facility design and construction standards, guidelines, specifications, and work processes. This role ensures global consistency, quality, and alignment with prophetic direction, Church identity, and member needs, while enabling Area and Regional teams to deliver projects effectively within their local contexts.

This position reports to the Managing Director of Meetinghouse Facilities Department and functions as a strategic steward of global facility design and construction knowledge—focusing on governance, innovation, and collaboration across geographies rather than direct operational execution.

Responsibilities

  • Provide global vision and leadership for the Church’s facility design and construction disciplines, ensuring standards align with doctrine, culture, and local member needs.
  • Establish and oversee the governance framework for global AEC policies, standards, and processes.
  • Collaborate with Area and regional teams to ensure consistent application of standards while supporting local adaptation where necessary.
  • Partner with other global directors and departments to align facilities strategy with overall Church temporal affairs direction.
  • Lead global initiatives in sustainability, cost stewardship, innovation, and digital transformation in design and construction practices.
  • Joint responsibility with the Director of Global FM to ensure Outsourced Project Management Partners (e.g. CBRE and JLL) provide quality, cost effective and timely service to the 6 U.S. Areas.
  • Lead a team of Project Managers, Architects, and professionals in Engineering and Construction.
  • Provide overall operations leadership to the team and support global operations in establishing and executing the strategic and financial goals of the department.
  • Develop, review, and implement annual budgets; lead the team and act as mentor and coach.
  • Coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directing the integration of technical activities.
  • Recruit employees, assign, direct, and evaluate their work, and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competence.
  • Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the department.
  • Analyze technology, resource needs, and market demand to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
  • Analyze building or system prototypes submitted by consultants to increase efficiency and decrease costs.
  • Responsible for leadership development around Leadership Review Process Plan.
  • Regularly direct the work of other employees (may include mixed workforce) or managers.
  • Responsible, in partnership with HR, to hire or terminate employees and recommend advancement, promotion, or any other change of status of employees within their division.
  • The employee reports to Managing Director

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Facilities Management, or related field.
  • 15 years of proven management experience in project management, construction management or facilities management.
  • Experience in leading, directing, and developing high-performing teams, including strategic planning, budgeting, organizing, prioritizing, and motivating.
  • Oversight of a large, distributed portfolio of buildings is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning, governance, and global coordination.
  • Proven ability to develop and meet project estimates, budgets, and schedules.
  • Able to meet deadlines and manage multidisciplinary projects.
  • PC knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and ability to learn job-specific custom software applications.
  • High degree of initiative, able to work with upper management, and must be results-oriented.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of the job, there may be physical requirements such as sitting for long periods and using computer monitors/equipment. Periodic site visits to construction sites around the globe will be required where traversing uneven terrain, up and down ladders and other construction obstacles will be the norm. Travel is anticipated to be 20% Annually.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Business or related field.
  • Advanced degree or professional certification.
  • 15 years of leadership experience in architecture, engineering, or construction in global or standards-based organizations.
  • Preferred experience in managing distributed real estate portfolios over large geographic regions with a global reach.
