POSITION OVERVIEW
Department: Central Sterile Processing / Cardiovascular Surgery Center
Position Type: Part-Time (20–28 hours per week)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Director of Nursing
Certification Required: CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician)
The Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical devices used in cardiovascular procedures. This role plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety and surgical readiness within a fast-paced cardiovascular surgery environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Instrument Processing & Sterilization
? Decontaminate, clean, inspect, assemble, and package cardiovascular surgical instruments and equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and facility protocols.
? Operate and monitor sterilization equipment including steam autoclaves, Primus steam sterilizer, TEE Cleaning Equipment
? Perform and document biological, chemical, and mechanical indicator testing to verify sterilization efficacy.
? Handle delicate cardiovascular instruments with precision to prevent damage.
? Prioritize and process STAT and urgent instrument requests to support uninterrupted surgical scheduling.
Case Cart Preparation & Inventory
? Build and verify cardiovascular surgery case carts according to surgeon preference cards and procedure requirements.
? Maintain accurate inventory of sterile supplies, implants, and specialty cardiovascular trays.
? Coordinate with OR staff and surgical schedulers to ensure timely instrument availability.
? Rotate stock using FIFO (first in, first out) principles and monitor sterility expiration dates.
Quality & Compliance
? Adhere to AAMI, AORN, Joint Commission, and CDC standards for sterile processing and infection prevention.
? Document all sterilization loads, instrument tracking, and quality control activities in the sterile processing information system (SPIS).
? Report instrument damage, missing items, or equipment malfunctions promptly to the supervisor.
? Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and competency assessments.
Collaboration & Communication
? Partner with cardiovascular surgeons, scrub technologists, and OR nurses to resolve instrument or supply issues in real time.
? Communicate effectively across shifts to ensure continuity of instrument processing and case readiness.
? Attend departmental meetings and continuing education sessions as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
? Active CRCST certification
? High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
? Minimum 1 year of sterile processing experience in a surgical or ambulatory surgical center environment.
? Working knowledge of sterile processing principles, microbiology fundamentals, and infection control standards.
? Ability to read and follow surgeon preference cards and instrument count sheets.
