Position Overview
The Distribution Systems Operator Engineer plays a vital role in ensuring the efficient, reliable, and safe distribution of electricity or gas to customers.
This position involves continuous system monitoring, control, and coordination of operations using SCADA systems and other advanced utility tools.
Candidates may be engineers or non-engineers with relevant experience in distribution operations.
This role requires a strong commitment to safety, real-time problem-solving, and communication with field and control center teams.
Key Responsibilities

System Monitoring: Continuously monitor the electrical or gas distribution system, including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and related assets using SCADA and other monitoring tools.

Emergency Response: Respond quickly to alarms, outages, and system emergencies. Isolate faults and restore service safely while adhering to all safety and regulatory protocols.

Load Management: Monitor and balance system loads to maintain reliability, manage peak demands, and perform load restoration where possible.

Switching Operations: Execute switching operations to reconfigure distribution networks, isolate faults, and restore power efficiently.

Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve issues involving equipment failures, voltage fluctuations, or power quality concerns.

Data Analysis: Analyze SCADA data and system trends to identify anomalies, performance gaps, and potential improvements.

Communication: Maintain constant communication with dispatchers, field crews, engineers, and maintenance personnel to coordinate switching, maintenance, and restoration activities.

Safety Compliance: Promote a strong culture of safety and ensure all operations comply with OSHA, NERC, and company safety policies.

Documentation: Record and maintain detailed logs of system events, switching activities, and outages; prepare operational reports as required.

Training & Development: Stay current on industry best practices, new technologies, and regulations through continuous professional development.

System Maintenance & Coordination: Support inspection and preventive maintenance of distribution equipment; collaborate with engineering, planning, and maintenance teams on system upgrades or repairs.
Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field preferred.

Equivalent experience in distribution system operations or utility environments will also be considered.

Experience:

Prior experience in distribution operations, utility control, or engineering roles strongly preferred.

Familiarity with power distribution equipment, field switching, and control room operations.

Certifications:

NERC certification or other relevant utility/industry certifications preferred.
