Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented GIS Technician III to support the input, processing, and maintenance of Alabama Power distribution lines and equipment assets within an ESRI GIS database.
This role requires experience with GIS data maintenance, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work in a team environment. The position will begin with an estimated training period of approximately 3 months onsite in Birmingham, AL, after which the role may transition to primarily remote work with occasional in-office requirements for meetings, training, or business needs.
Candidates must currently live within a reasonable commuting distance of the Birmingham, AL office.
Key Responsibilities

Input, process, update, and maintain electric distribution line and equipment asset data in an ESRI GIS database.

Review and validate GIS data for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.

Maintain records related to Alabama Power distribution assets.

Support GIS mapping, data editing, and database maintenance activities.

Work with internal teams to resolve data discrepancies and ensure accurate system updates.

Use ESRI ArcGIS tools to support utility distribution mapping and asset management.

Follow established procedures, standards, and quality requirements.

Participate in training, meetings, and other business-related activities as needed.
Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

One of the following is required:

Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or a related field

GIS Certificate

At least 2 years of full-time GIS work experience

Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software required.

Proficiency with standard computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Must be flexible to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Must be able to work 8- or 10-hour shifts, starting as early as 7:00 AM and ending as late as 5:00 PM.

Must currently reside within a reasonable commuting distance of Birmingham, AL.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro.

Knowledge of electric power distribution systems.
