Job Title: Direct Care Staff/ Residential Counselor/Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist (MHRS)
Location: Carpinteria, CA
Job Type: Full-Time, Part-Time, and Per Diem (Evening and Weekend shifts available)
About Us:
We are a Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Program (STRTP) in Carpinteria serving foster youth females ages 12–17 who are survivors or at risk of commercial sexual exploitation. Our program provides a safe, structured, and trauma-informed environment where youth can heal, build skills, and work toward stability and independence.
Position Overview:
The Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist (MHRS) provides direct care and support to youth in the program, ensuring their safety, engagement, and progress toward treatment goals. MHRS staff help maintain a consistent routine, model positive behaviors, and support clients through daily challenges. Supervision can be provided for those seeking to meet professional requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Implement individualized behavioral and rehabilitation plans under the direction of the clinical team
- Model and reinforce pro-social behaviors and emotional regulation skills
- Support clients in developing life skills such as hygiene, communication, goal setting, and conflict resolution
- Run psychoeducational groups as directed by the clinical team
- Transport clients safely to and from appointments, school, and community activities using a company vehicle
- Ensure clients arrive on time to all scheduled appointments and commitments
- Prepare and serve meals according to program guidelines
- Support and supervise clients during daily routines and activities
- Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment within the home
- Accurately document client activities, progress, and incidents
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to ensure consistent care
- Participate in team meetings and required trainings
Qualifications
At least 21 years or older.
Associates Degree or equivalent years of experience
Ability to supervise, evaluate and implement resident’s Needs and Services Plans. Current CPR/First Aid Certifications
Crisis Intervention strategies and trainings
Clear Live Scan background check or Current Criminal Exemption
And meet ONE of the following standards:
Have a Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree;
Have a valid Child Development Teaching Permit;
Have completed 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Development, or Foster and Kinship Care Education and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth;
Have a valid certificate as an Alcohol Counselor, Drug Counselor or Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth;
Have a valid Vocational Training certificate, credential or documentation demonstrating that the individual is a trade journeyperson who instructs children and non-minor dependents in vocational skills and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth;
OR
Have previously been employed as a staff or volunteer at a group home or short-term residential therapeutic center for at least one year.
Have relevant experience as determined by the department to meet any of the above requirements.
At a minimum, a direct care staff shall demonstrate all the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
1. Knowledge and understanding of the needs of children served in a children’s residential setting.
2. Skills and ability to engage and develop e rapport with children who have various backgrounds.
3. Skills and ability to provide consistency and behavioral limits through relationship-based interventions.
4. Skills to communicate effectively with the ability to solve problems in a collaborative manner.
Schedule & Pay:
- Evening and weekend shifts available
- Full-time, part-time, and per diem opportunities
