Senior Geotechnical Engineer

About the Opportunity

Our client is a well-established and highly respected engineering consulting firm with decades of experience delivering geotechnical, geo-environmental, and infrastructure-related services across a diverse portfolio of public and private sector projects. Their work spans aviation, transportation, commercial development, utilities, and government facilities, with involvement across all phases—from site investigation through design and construction support.

They are looking to bring on a Senior Geotechnical Engineer who will play a key leadership role in both technical delivery and strategic growth of the firm.

Position Overview

This is a high-impact leadership role for an experienced geotechnical professional (8 years) who is looking to move beyond pure technical execution and into client leadership, team management, and business development.

You will be responsible for leading projects, managing client relationships, mentoring teams, and helping shape the future direction of the firm.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

  • Lead geotechnical investigations, analyses, and design for a wide range of project types
  • Oversee subsurface exploration programs, laboratory testing, and engineering evaluations
  • Provide recommendations for foundations, earthwork, slope stability, groundwater, and pavement design
  • Review and sign off on reports, calculations, and technical deliverables
  • Provide construction-phase support including QA/QC and field coordination

Project & Team Management

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously from proposal through completion
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers, geologists, and field staff
  • Coordinate with internal teams, drill crews, and laboratory personnel
  • Ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to high quality standards

Client Management & Business Development

  • Maintain and grow relationships with existing clients
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities across the Mid-Atlantic region
  • Lead proposal development, scope definition, and fee negotiations
  • Represent the firm in client meetings, industry events, and agency interactions

Agency Coordination & Strategy

  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies as needed
  • Support permitting efforts and regulatory compliance
  • Contribute to firm-wide strategic initiatives, including service expansion and market positioning
  • Act as a trusted advisor to leadership on growth opportunities and operational improvements

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field
  • 8 years of geotechnical engineering experience across diverse project types
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required (or ability to obtain quickly)
  • Strong background in geotechnical analysis, reporting, and construction support
  • Proven experience managing projects, clients, and teams
  • Experience with proposal writing and business development strongly preferred
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

What Makes This Opportunity Unique

  • Ability to step into a leadership role with real influence on projects and company direction
  • Exposure to a wide variety of complex and high-profile infrastructure projects
  • Opportunity to help shape growth strategy and expand client relationships
  • Collaborative environment with strong technical depth and long-standing industry reputation

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Entrepreneurial mindset with interest in growing a business, not just executing projects
  • Strong communicator who can balance technical depth with client-facing responsibilities
  • Someone who enjoys mentoring and building teams
  • Comfortable operating in both technical and strategic capacities
