Position Summary
The Grounds and Building Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, appearance, and functionality of the facility grounds and buildings. This position supports daily operations by performing routine maintenance, repairs, landscaping, cleaning, and safety inspections to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for staff, children, families, and visitors.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesGrounds Maintenance
- Maintain outdoor areas including lawns, playgrounds, walkways, parking areas, and landscaped spaces.
- Mow lawns, trim hedges, pull weeds, rake leaves, and remove debris.
- Monitor playground equipment and outdoor structures for safety concerns and needed repairs.
- Remove snow, ice, or other hazards from walkways and entrances as needed.
- Ensure outdoor trash receptacles are emptied and maintained.
Building Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs including painting, drywall repair, changing light bulbs, replacing filters, and basic plumbing or electrical tasks.
- Conduct regular inspections of classrooms, offices, kitchens, restrooms, and common areas for maintenance or safety concerns.
- Assist with furniture assembly, moving equipment, and room setup for events or activities.
- Maintain HVAC systems, doors, locks, windows, and other building systems as directed.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repair situations.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, licensing, and sanitation standards.
- Identify and report potential hazards, damages, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Maintain safe storage and proper use of tools, chemicals, and maintenance supplies.
- Support emergency preparedness procedures and facility safety protocols.
General Responsibilities
- Maintain maintenance logs, supply inventories, and repair records.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and staff regarding maintenance needs and project updates.
- Operate maintenance equipment and tools safely and responsibly.
- Assist with special projects and seasonal maintenance tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in building maintenance, custodial work, landscaping, or related field preferred.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general repair work.
- Ability to safely operate maintenance equipment and power tools.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods of time.
Work Environment
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, maintenance equipment, outdoor weather conditions, and loud noises may occur.
- Schedule may occasionally require early mornings, evenings, or weekends for emergency repairs or special projects.
