Reports to: Facilities Manager/Lead Maintenance Worker

Service Area: Santa Fe, NM

Employment Term: Full-time; Non-Exempt, Bargaining Unit, Yes

Salary/Wage Range: Maintenance 1: $17.17-27.62/hour. Maintenance 2: $19.70-31.69/hour. New employees are hired only up to midpoint depending on qualifications and experience.

Summary

Under the direction of the Facilities Manager and/or Lead Maintenance Worker, this position performs a variety of facilities maintenance tasks in offices, classrooms, restrooms, and other campus buildings. The role also assists with grounds crew activities and performs other related duties as assigned.

All responsibilities are expected to be carried out in a positive and respectful manner that supports and advances the mission and vision of the New Mexico School for the Deaf.

It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner, with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned, such as but not limited to, campus Security and Safety, duties as required).

  • Perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in various trades, including:
    • Carpentry
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical
    • Cement finishing
    • Masonry
    • Glazing
    • Minor heating and refrigeration repairs
    • Locksmith work
    • Metal work
    • Office appliance repair
    • Painting and plastering
    • Roofing
    • Sheet metal work
    • Welding
    • Floor refinishing
    • General maintenance and upkeep of campus grounds
  • Move, assemble, disassemble, and repair furniture as needed
  • Set up tables, chairs, and tents for school events
  • Perform rodent control as needed
  • Collect and transport recyclable materials to designated bins
  • Maintain playgrounds to ensure they are clean and safe
  • Transport trash and other waste to designated dump sites
  • Shovel or mechanically remove snow from driveways, walkways, boiler room steps, and building entrances
  • Apply sand or salt to slippery areas to prevent accidents
  • Report early on weekdays and weekends during inclement weather to ensure sidewalks and driveways are clear and safe
  • Assist with general gardening and landscaping tasks, including:
    • Pest control
    • Mowing and trimming edges along driveways, walkways, flower beds, and walls
    • Pulling weeds
    • Hedging and pruning shrubs and trees
    • Raking leaves and cleaning up litter
    • Watering lawns, shrubs, trees, and flowers
    • Planting and transplanting flowers
    • Turning soil and fertilizing lawns, plants, and trees

Additional duties may be assigned depending on school needs and workload.

 

Position-Specific Qualifications:

 

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must possess a valid NM driver's license.

 

 

Maintenance 1
This is an entry-level position; however, one (1) year of experience in building maintenance or handyman-type repair services is preferred.

 

Maintenance 2
This is a skilled-level position. Three (3) or more years of experience in Building maintenance or Handyman services is preferred. Alternatively, specialization with electrical, Mechanical, carpentry, painting, equipment repair or other related maintenance fields. Experience with equipment use and machinery repairs is a plus.

  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Works weekends or afterhours as required.
  • Work outside in the sun, rain, snow and cold.
  • Must have the physical strength and flexibility to perform manual labor
  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required include:

    • Ability to adjust focus

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to drive for long periods of time; stand; walk and sit.
