We are seeking a Senior Property Accountant to support the accounting and financial reporting functions for a portfolio of commercial and/or residential real estate assets. This role will be responsible for overseeing the monthly close process, preparing and reviewing financial statements, performing complex reconciliations, and serving as a key accounting partner to property management and asset management teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes for an assigned portfolio of real estate properties
- Prepare and review property-level financial statements, variance analyses, and supporting schedules
- Record and review journal entries, accruals, intercompany transactions, and account reconciliations
- Perform detailed balance sheet reconciliations and investigate discrepancies
- Review tenant billings, CAM reconciliations, operating expense recoveries, and lease-related accounting transactions
- Ensure accuracy of rent rolls, lease abstracts, and revenue recognition in accordance with accounting standards
- Monitor property cash activity, prepare cash forecasts, and support distributions and funding requests
- Collaborate with property managers and asset managers to analyze financial performance and explain operating results
- Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and reforecasting processes
- Support external audits, lender reporting requirements, and tax preparation by providing schedules and documentation
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting efficiencies
- Assist with onboarding new properties, acquisitions, dispositions, and other special projects
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior property accountants and accounting staff as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 4–7 years of property accounting, real estate accounting, or related accounting experience
- Strong understanding of GAAP, property accounting, and lease accounting principles
- Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements and complex account reconciliations
- Experience with CAM reconciliations, operating expense allocations, and tenant billing processes
- Proficiency with real estate accounting software such as Yardi, MRI, AppFolio, Entrata, or similar platforms
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial analysis functions
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple properties, deadlines, and priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification
- Experience with commercial real estate portfolios, including office, industrial, retail, or mixed-use properties
- Experience with multifamily, affordable housing, or institutional real estate portfolios
- Exposure to acquisitions, dispositions, and property transitions
- Experience partnering with property management, asset management, and ownership groups
