Set on the JCC Campus in Newton and physically connected to 2Life Community’s Coleman House, Opus
Newton is an inclusive, welcoming community. A defining, unique element is the focus on volunteering as a
community-building tool. All Opus residents agree to volunteer at least 10 hours/month. In addition, there
are beautifully-landscaped terraces with a cafe, cultural arts and learning spaces, fitness areas, patios, and
gardens. Walking trails link our campus to the JCC, Newton Community Farm, and Nahanton Park.

GENERAL SUMMARY
Fitness team members engage Nahanton Campus residents in a meaningful experience, offering diverse
exercise classes, health, wellness, and expressive therapy programs that contribute to healthy aging. The
Fitness Specialist works directly with residents in group classes, small group training, personal training, and
via one-on-one sessions to support their fitness goals, with a focus on building strength and fall prevention.
The schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Facilitate and lead daily exercise classes for residents; upgrade and modify the level of exercise classes where appropriate to accommodate resident needs
- Assess resident competency, both cognitive and physical, by conducting evaluations before resident participation in the Fitness & Wellness gym usage program
- Provide direct supervision for gym usage where appropriate
- Keep regular and up-to-date records on class attendance, falls and other important metrics in
- Salesforce, 2Life’s resident data platform
- Provide personal training as part of resident wellness integration plans, as needed and where appropriate
- Collect and update relevant fitness-related information for residents using the gym
- Facilitate the resident gym key entry program for safe, independent gym usage, and follow-through on exercise and rehab protocols in collaboration with resident’s physicians, PT’s, and OT’s
- Work closely to schedule and coordinate outside vendors who will teach classes for residents (yoga, zumba, etc.).
- Participate in continuing education to stay current on best practices and research related to healthy aging, including exercise, health, wellness, and nutrition
- Collaborate with campus, resident-facing program staff to develop resident-centric programs
- Participate in program evaluation
PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, or Health & Fitness required
- Personal Training Certification Required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, bilingual or multilingual in Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, is a plus
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with older adults, including those with cognitive or physical impairments
- Ability to listen and establish trust and remain non-judgmental
- Good organization skills, including the ability to work independently and maintain accurate records
- Computer literate- Google Workspace, & Salesforce
- Group Exercise certification (not required)
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to bend, stretch, stand, and lift (fitness) equipment up to 20 pounds.
