Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist – Blood Bank
Location: Bethesda, MD 20814
Duration: Full-Time
Schedule: 40 hours/week | Night & Rotational Shifts
Compensation:
Without benefits: $40.41/hour
With benefits: $38.00/hour
Annual Pay Range Equivalent: $64,000 – $80,000/year
Position Summary
Provide independent clinical laboratory support within the NIH Clinical Center, Department of Transfusion Medicine, Transfusion Services Laboratory (TSL). Support specialized serologic and molecular immunohematology testing, blood component manufacturing, and training programs in transfusion medicine.
Minimum Education
- Master’s degree preferred
- Bachelor’s degree acceptable (Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology)
Additional Qualifications
- 3 years of blood bank laboratory experience (preferred)
- Completion of an accredited Clinical Laboratory Science training program
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (including Teams)

Core Responsibilities
- Perform specialized immunohematology testing (pre-analytic, analytic, post-analytic phases)
- Evaluate transfusion orders and consult with clinical staff to clarify testing needs
- Conduct compatibility (crossmatch) testing using automated and manual methods
- Resolve routine and moderately complex RBC antibody issues
- Manufacture blood components (e.g., frozen plasma, leukoreduced RBCs, buffy coats, pathogen-reduced platelets)
- Perform lot release, labeling, equipment calibration, maintenance, and quality assurance
- Manage blood inventory, including import/export of components
- Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
- Learn and apply new laboratory techniques
- Emergency Essential / Tier I position
Deliverables
- Equipment cleaning, inspection, and validation (as needed)
- Documentation and reports related to laboratory testing, antibody resolution, crossmatching, and component preparation (ad-hoc)
- Updates and presentations to lab staff (ad-hoc).
