CORE JOB SUMMARY The Phlebotomist 3 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. An employee in this position conducts interviews, takes vital signs, and tests blood samples. The Phlebotomist 3 relates to and interacts well with patients by taking into consideration their age-specific, physical, and psychosocial needs. The incumbent also uses the laboratory and hospital systems to accession data, prepare samples for shipping, and perform other appropriate system functions. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Performs patient phlebotomy by prescribed technique outlined in the phlebotomy procedure manual. 2. Processes hematology and oncology patients as priority. 3. Works on pre-accession specimens and matches and organizes orders and labels for the day. 4. Follows patient identification process. 5. Answers questions and resolves problems pertaining to test requisitions, specimen requirements, test additions, priority changes, and patient results. 6. Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol and rotates previous stock. 7. Maintains required files and log systems in a neat and accurate manner. 8. Assists supervisor in recording statistics and generates reports. 9. Processes cancellations, credits, and additions of test procedures. 10. Picks up, unpacks, dates and stores in a timely manner according to manufacturers’ recommendation. Checks packing slips, verifies number of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee. 11. Removes, empty boxes and recyclable material and disposes of them as per Standard Operating Procedures. Prepares biohazard containers for use and then disposal. 12. Prepares samples for shipping. 13. Assures accuracy and completeness throughout the patient registration process. Follows up with patient’s physician to request missing information or to clarify test orders appropriately and in a timely manner. 14. Assists in the maintenance of hardware by changing paper, labels, and/or printer ribbons when necessary. 15. Serves as a lead/back-up when Supervisor is unavailable. 16. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. CORE QUALIFICATIONS Education: High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license Experience: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience required Certification and Licensing: Refer to department description for applicable certification requirements Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Learning Agility: Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands. Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders. DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM Department Specific Functions Performs all department-specific functions of the Core Phlebotomist 3 while serving as a senior resource for advanced specimen collection, workflow support, and operational troubleshooting. Assists with resolving complex specimen collection issues, missing information, incorrect containers, test cancellations, add-on requests, recollection needs, special handling requirements, and other pre-analytical concerns in collaboration with supervisors and laboratory staff. Supports Blood Bank and specialty collection workflows, including Type and Screen, Blood Type Confirmation, transplant-related HLA/Chimerism specimens, reference laboratory testing, timed specimens, and other high-priority or sensitive collections. Provides guidance and support to phlebotomy staff regarding patient identification, specimen labeling, UChart order release, collection documentation, specimen routing, and compliance with departmental procedures. Assists with onboarding, training, and competency validation of new or existing phlebotomy staff, including observation of collection technique, documentation practices, and adherence to departmental workflows. Serves as a point of contact for routine operational questions from phlebotomy staff, clinical teams, laboratory departments, and supervisors related to specimen collection, specimen requirements, and workflow expectations. Monitors daily draw station workflow, patient flow, specimen transport needs, supply availability, and operational barriers, escalating concerns to the supervisor or department leadership as appropriate. Assists supervisor or designee with maintaining departmental logs, quality records, specimen issue tracking, rejected specimen follow-up, supply records, statistics, and reports as requested. Supports implementation of workflow updates, new test buildouts, reference laboratory changes, template updates, and departmental process improvements by helping communicate and reinforce changes with staff. Participates in quality assurance and process improvement activities related to specimen collection accuracy, labeling compliance, turnaround time, patient experience, and pre-analytical error reduction. Reinforces safety, infection prevention, confidentiality, biohazard handling, sharps disposal, and waste disposal procedures among staff and reports noncompliance or safety concerns to leadership. Provides professional communication and escalation support for patient care concerns, provider requests, collection delays, difficult collections, and other operational issues requiring senior-level judgment. Assists with inventory review, supply ordering communication, expired supply removal, and coordination of supplies needed for special collection workflows or assigned clinical locations. Performs other advanced department-specific duties as assigned to support UHealth Laboratories, Laboratory Support Services, and departmental operations.
