Location: Remote work is not offered. BFI’s main office is in Sioux Falls, SD and there is an ancillary office in New York City. This hire will start in Sioux Falls and stay for roughly 6 months. BFI will provide a housing stipend during this period. Pending acceptable performance, this hire will move to Austin, TX and work out of space private to BFI within a larger coworking facility.
Job Overview:
This position provides the opportunity to enter at a junior level and to learn real estate and finance, with an emphasis on construction of single-family and small multifamily residential property. Key job responsibilities include: underwriting real estate; underwriting borrowers; and helping to process, fulfill, and service loans.
The work environment is supportive and friendly but demanding. It enables those with initiative and talent to stand out. A successful Loan Underwriter may quickly grow responsibility and compensation.
The intended path of progression is to a sales role, working with existing and potential clients to originate loans. BFI does not cold-call clients and in-person client meetings are infrequent. Nonetheless, strong interpersonal skills and comfort on the phone will become necessary.
Qualifications:
The success of BFI is based on originating loans that repay. Attention to detail is critical.
This position will require moderate Excel, Word, and Outlook skills which can be learned on the job.
BFI embraces a strong service-based culture. The Loan Underwriter should expect to work 45 hours in a typical week. While there is some ability to customize hours, roughly 8:15-5:45 with half an hour off for lunch would be typical. Certain days/weeks will require greater hours. There will be minimal travel.
Education: A bachelor's degree. Please include GPA with resume submission and any other school and standardized testing scores you feel relevant.
Experience: Intended for those with 0-3 years of experience. Preference given to those with a demonstrated interest in real estate and/or sales ability.
Compensation: Salary and benefits plus a sign-on bonus. After the first full year of employment, eligible for participation in bonus pool.
