Job Summary
The Solar Technician II is responsible for performing intermediate-level maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of utility-scale or commercial solar PV systems. This role requires hands-on field work, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical issues with limited supervision. The technician will support daily operations to ensure maximum system uptime, performance, and reliability.
Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled and corrective maintenance on solar PV systems, inverters, trackers, transformers, and balance-of-system equipment.
- Conduct troubleshooting and diagnostics of electrical faults, mechanical issues, communication failures, and performance deviations.
- Execute inverter resets, string testing, IV curve tracing, thermal imaging, and similar diagnostic tasks.
- Inspect, clean, repair, and replace modules, connectors, wiring, combiner boxes, and safety devices.
- Perform high-voltage (up to 1,500 VDC and 34.5 kV AC) safe work using proper PPE and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs, service reports, parts usage records, and site documentation.
- Assist with SCADA monitoring, performance reporting, and responding to system alarms.
- Support commissioning activities, system upgrades, retrofits, and warranty repairs.
- Operate heavy equipment (as qualified): O&M trucks, UTVs, forklift, skid steer, etc.
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies, OSHA standards, and electrical codes (NEC).
- Coordinate with the site supervisor and remote control center for work prioritization.
- Mentor Solar Technician I staff and support team training as required.
Qualifications
Required
- 2–4 years of experience in solar PV O&M, electrical maintenance, or related technical field.
- Knowledge of solar PV system components: modules, inverters, combiner boxes, DC/AC circuits, trackers.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, single-line drawings, and equipment manuals.
- Familiarity with multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers, IV curve tracers, infrared cameras.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Strong safety mindset and experience with LOTO procedures.
Preferred
- NABCEP PV Associate or equivalent certification.
- Experience with utility-scale solar sites (20 MW ).
- High-voltage switching experience (medium-voltage preferred).
- OSHA 10/30 certification.
- Experience with SCADA or remote monitoring platforms.
Work Environment
- Outdoor field-based work, standing/walking for extended periods.
- Exposure to heat, cold, wind, dust, and uneven terrain.
- Occasional on-call rotations, weekends, or overtime based on site needs.
