Job Summary
The Solar Technician III is a senior-level field technician responsible for advanced troubleshooting, high-voltage maintenance, and technical leadership at utility-scale or commercial solar PV sites. This position performs complex diagnostic work, leads maintenance activities, supports system optimization, and mentors lower-level technicians. The Technician III ensures safe and reliable plant operations with minimal supervision and often serves as the lead technician on site.
Responsibilities
- Perform advanced electrical and mechanical troubleshooting for solar PV systems, including inverters, transformers, switchgear, and trackers.
- Lead and execute high-voltage (up to 1,500 VDC / 34.5 kV AC) switching, testing, and maintenance following strict safety protocols.
- Conduct detailed diagnostics: IV curve tracing, module-level testing, megger testing, thermal imaging, and power quality analysis.
- Oversee scheduled and corrective maintenance activities and ensure work quality, compliance, and documentation standards.
- Mentor and train Solar Technician I & II staff in safety, troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures.
- Serve as the on-site technical lead for outages, system derates, alarms, and performance issues.
- Coordinate with engineering teams for complex technical investigations and root-cause analysis.
- Support commissioning, retrofits, warranty repairs, and equipment upgrades.
- Review and interpret electrical diagrams, SCADA data, and system performance trends to optimize plant output.
- Manage spare parts inventory, tools, and equipment usage.
- Provide daily reports, maintenance logs, switching records, and safety documentation.
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA, NEC, NFPA 70E, and company safety requirements.
- Participate in on-call rotation and respond to site emergencies as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- 4 years of solar PV O&M, electrical maintenance, or similar technical experience.
- Demonstrated competency with high-voltage systems (medium-voltage switching strongly preferred).
- Strong ability to diagnose inverter, tracker, fiber/communication, and BOS equipment issues.
- Proficiency with electrical test equipment (multimeter, clamp meter, insulation tester, IV curve tracer, thermal camera, power analyzer).
- Ability to lead field crews and manage work assignments independently.
- Ability to read/interpret electrical schematics, site plans, single-line diagrams.
- Valid driver's license and ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
- Strong safety awareness, including LOTO and NFPA 70E procedures.
Preferred
- NABCEP PV Installation Professional or PV Technical certification.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Experience with utility-scale solar (20 MW ).
- Experience with SCADA platforms, networking basics, and powerplant monitoring tools.
- Experience writing RCA (root cause analysis) reports and technical summaries.
Work Environment
- Field-based outdoor work, in varied weather and terrain.
- Regular lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, working at heights or in confined spaces.
- Possible weekend, overtime, and on-call requirements depending on site needs.
