LIBRARY ASSISTANT

QUALIFICATIONS

48 Hours or more of college credit/Score 456 or better on Paraprofessional Praxis test. Demonstrate aptitude or competence for assigned duties.

JOB GOALS

To provide a well organized, smoothly functioning library environment in which teachers and students can take full advantage of available resources.

To assist the teachers and students in the effective use of the library as a learning source.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Types and processes orders, reports, bibliographies, forms, library schedules, letters to publishers, catalog cards, etc.
  1. Orders and receives books selected for purchase by the librarian.
  2. Maintains files of catalog cards, vertical file materials, publishers' catalogs, etc.
  1. Writes daily notices to homeroom teachers concerning overdue books, and collects fines for such books
  1. Makes simple repairs on damaged books and processes more severely damaged books for repair at the bindery.
  1. Monitors attendance in the library and keeps attendance records.
  1. Readies materials for reserve on teachers' requests, and maintains the reserve shelf
  1. Prepares current magazine for shelving and maintains the back number stacks.
  1. Assists in the annul inventory of library materials and the preparation of the list of missing materials and materials to be discarded.
  1. Shelves incoming materials.
  1. Maintaining current inventory of supplies and suggests items for acquisition as needed.
  1. Oversees the general neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays.
  2. Helps students locate reference materials and other instructional materials.
  3. Reads to small groups of students (in elementary libraries only).
  4. Assists the librarian in maintaining proper student discipline.
  1. Assist individual students in locating reference materials and other instructional materials.
  1. Assists students in making proper use of library equipment and materials.
  2. Keeps library materials and equipment in working order.
  3. Operates the circulation desk and keeps complete circulation files.
  4. Operates equipment and apparatus on request, either in the library or elsewhere.
  1. Distributes schedule of the use of the media center and its materials and equipment.
  1. Trains and supervises student library assistants.
  1. Assists in preparing and maintaining special education displays which reinforce important parts of the curriculum.
  1. Performs such other tasks as the librarian may from time to time assign.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This job may require lifting of objects that exceed 40 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 20 pounds such as dockets, ledgers, and small tools. Other physical demands may be required.

  1. Ability to climb.

Normal working environment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ten month year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
