Research Associate (temporary, part-time) - Center for Global Health Science and Security - Georgetown University
Georgetown University's Center for Global Health Science and Security , directed by Dr. Rebecca Katz, conducts original research the help decision makers worldwide build sustainable capacities to prevent, detect, respond to public health emergencies and provide policymakers, donors, and researchers with a high-quality evidence base to make decisions that promote health security.
The Center's Verena Initiative is a network of over 40 scientists led by 16 investigators in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada focused broadly on forecasting viral emergence. In 2023, the Verena program launched Pharos, an open database of wildlife disease surveillance data.
Job Overview
The Research Associate - in a temporary, part-time role - will play a role in expanding the platform, helping to coordinate data synthesis and production efforts by identifying high-value datasets on wildlife disease from peer-reviewed literature and scientific community platforms (e.g., social media, conferences), and engaging with researchers to access, format, clean, and share their data.
They will translate these findings into peer-reviewed publications that launch the platform publicly and document the process of data standardization that is used in the Pharos platform.
Working primarily with and reporting to Dr. Colin Carlson, the Research Associate will collaborate with other members of the research center and the Verena initiative, including faculty and research and administrative staff.
The hourly pay rate is $22.00, with an expected workload of 5 to 10 hours per week.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in law, public policy, epidemiology, public health, health economics, health policy, or related discipline
  • 0-2 years of professional work experience
  • Demonstrated interest in global health and health security
  • Ability to prioritize, focus and achieve results in a fast paced and complex environment
  • Ability to initiate and complete tasks under tight deadlines and changing priorities, while maintaining attention to results and detail
  • Ability to professionally and effectively communicate (oral and verbal) and to work others in order to achieve team goals
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a team
  • Ability to effectively perform database management, literature review, and online research

  • Languages fluency in addition to English
