JOB TITLE:
Custodian
DIVISION: Facilities
DEPARTMENT: Facilities

SUMMARY:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, performs routine custodial duties at assigned Tribal locations, includes maintaining assigned buildings and adjacent ground areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Including but not limited to the following duties and responsibilities.
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in offices, hallways, and other assigned work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets
  • Clean offices, lounges, kitchens, hallways, conference rooms, and other facilities as assigned
  • Dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty waste receptacles; spot mop spills; remove debris as needed
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals.
  • Fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile, walls, light fixtures and windows; unclog drains and toilets
  • Pick up trash and other debris from grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to tribal facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to tribal buildings
  • Perform a variety of routine general maintenance and repairs to custodial equipment
  • Clean up furniture, equipment and debris following events
  • Operate custodial and grounds maintenance equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, and blowers
  • Monitor inventory levels of custodial supplies as required; assist with ordering, receiving and maintaining inventory of custodial supplies as assigned
  • Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate personnel
  • Respond to emergency custodial requests as needed
  • Maintain routine records related to assigned activities

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Non-supervisory

OTHER DUTIES:
  • Attend mandatory trainings
  • Attend meetings as required by position
  • Travel when required
  • Perform related duties as assigned

QIALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work
  • Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures
  • Basic record-keeping techniques
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Correct English usage; grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy

ABILITY TO:
  • Apply cultural sensitivity to Native American programs
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Perform routine custodial duties at assigned tribal locations
  • Operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment and tools
  • Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair
  • Follow directions and instructions effectively
  • Order and receive supplies
  • Use basic computer skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
An equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered. For a
high school diploma/GED equivalency, a ratio of 1:1 will be used for applicants with less than a high school diploma/GED. This means that one year of paid full-time work experience equals one year of high school education.
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate and sufficient training and/or experience to demonstrate the relevant knowledge, skills and abilities of the job. OR
  • An applicant that has completed an 8th grade education will need to have 4 (four) years of full-time work experience to substitute for the required high school diploma/GED and sufficient training and/or experience to demonstrate the relevant knowledge, skills and abilities of the job.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: To perform and to continue to be qualified for this position, the requirements listed below must be met at a time of hire or may be obtained within a specific amount of time depending on the position requirements. Costs for required certifications, licenses, and registration are to be covered by employee, unless offered by the Tribe.
  • Prior to hiring and throughout employment must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License and maintain insurability under the Tribe’s vehicle insurance policy
  • Requires regular contact with or control over Indian children and is therefore subject to the background investigative process to comply with P.L. 101-630

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials
  • Sitting for extended periods of time
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching

Essential Government Functions:
All work performed under this job classification is in support of essential governmental functions of the Tribe.
