SHELTER SUPPORT STAFF

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Shelter Support Staff

Program/ CAPSC Home For Now

Reports To: Shelter Program Manager

FLSA Status: Regular/Full-Time/Non-Exempt;

Weekday/Weekend

First/Second/Third Shifts Available

Probationary Period: Ninety (90) days

Work from Home Status: Not Eligible

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the HCSC Program Manager, the Shelter Support Staff position plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness within the shelter.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or GED

• Prior experience working with unsheltered individuals and the commitment to continue training.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Shelter Support Staff position entails a wide range of responsibilities and requires a diverse skill set. Here is a comprehensive summary:

• Fill Weekend/Holiday shifts as required.

• Monitor the safety and well-being of shelter participants, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.

• Enforce shelter policies and procedures, including those relating to substance use and illegal behavior.

• To maintain cleanliness and organization within the shelter, staff will replenish interior storage as required, manage laundry to uphold linen availability, clean common areas by sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping, ensure the entryway remains free of clutter, and attend to any other tasks essential for maintaining order.

• Assist new guests through the intake process, rule review and bed assignment.

• Conduct regular rounds to ensure safety.

• Answer telephone calls and referrals, responding to client needs.

• Utilizes effective problem-solving techniques to resolve conflicts, employing strategies such as de-escalation and crisis intervention, as necessary.

• Complete records, notes, and all reporting requirements accurately.

• Identify and report safety concerns to the Shelter Program Manager.

• Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and residents in addressing issues and ensuring compliance with rules.

• Attending staff meetings and training courses as assigned.

• Maintain overnight shelter safety by setting alarms and enforcing quiet hours when working overnight shifts.

• Perform any other duties as required.

• Respects confidentiality of information about agency staff, personnel issues, and other program operations.

• Maintains a positive and productive attitude regarding the center and the CAPSC Agency when interacting both within the program and with the greater community.

EMPLOYMENT SCREENING

Valid Driver's License and insured vehicle (100/300 minimum coverage) for use on the job or acceptable alternative, driving record check, criminal record check, randomized drug screening.

Head Start, Early Head Start, Childcare, and Home Visiting Programs are also subject to the following: Head Start and Childcare Licensing requires a criminal record check and finger printing to be completed prior to employment. An initial physical examination record must be obtained upon hire, updated every three years, and kept on file with Human Resources. If a TB screening indicates high risk, results of a TB test must be kept on file including any treatment received. An initial driving record check will be conducted. Driver’s license information will also be submitted to the agency’s automobile insurance carrier.
