Mountain Mule Hardwoods is Hiring a Part-Time Sanding & Finishing Assistant in Small Hardwood Furniture Shop Near Limestone, TN

Small family furniture business looking for an energetic assistant who wants to learn. Attention to detail is required.

28 - 35 hours a week, every week. Our work hours are generally M - F 8am - 4pm but we would consider someone who wants to work 8am - 2pm or 3pm or to take one day off each week. This is a 1099 contract position which means you pay your own taxes at tax time instead of it coming out of your check automatically. Most of our team sets aside about 20% of what they make to pay their taxes each year. A contract position also means there are no benefits. We work from our residence in Limestone, TN, about 6 country miles from the I-81 Fall Branch / Jonesborough exit. Kingsport, Johnson City, Gray, Greenville and Jonesborough are all about 25 - 45 minutes away.

This is a small team workshop environment shared with 5 - 6 other people, and you will be working right alongside one owner (or sometimes both of us.) Our business is not open to the public so there is very little customer interaction. We have been in business since 2014, building Shaker-style and mid-century modern hardwood furniture and shipping it all over the country. If you work for us for a while like most people do, we will make sure you get to build (we'll help you) some furniture for yourself. We try to make this a fun place to work, but please be aware this is a very physical job and we all work very hard.

The main job we need done is sanding bed and table parts. This is a repetitious and sometimes physically tiring job which requires close attention to detail. Sanding seems to be really satisfying for people with a touch of OCD. ;) If you don't know how to sand, it's ok, we will train you. We use orbital sanders and do some hand sanding as well, to make sure our parts are nice and smooth and that someone's bed sheets won't catch on them, for example. It is almost better to find someone without prior knowledge of sanding so we don't have bad habits to break. You are welcome to listen to music or podcasts while doing it like the ladies who sand for us now. We try not to have people sanding for hours without end, and try to break it up with other tasks like finishing furniture (we will teach you - and we don't use any harsh chemicals,) packing furniture to be shipped, selecting pieces of lumber for the next project, helping photograph finished pieces, cleaning clamps and sweeping. Because we are small, we all do many of these jobs.

We are not jerks, but we are old school and will not tolerate laziness, tardiness or excuses. It is not fair to the rest of our team to have one person who is not pulling their weight. We all take pride in our finished pieces.

To apply: send us your resume or a brief work history. Look us up, see what we make, show some interest (but please don't call us - we will call you.) We are looking for the right personality to add to our team, in addition to the bullet points. We may ask for references. We will do phone or in-person interviews, and maybe a paid try out day for finalists to be sure it is a good fit for you and for us. We will hire whenever we find the right person, and we are picky!
