Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
The faculty of the School of Visual Art and Design at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track faculty appointment at the rank of Instructor to begin August 16, 2024. This is a 9-month appointment that may be renewed annually contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
Applicants must have an MFA degree in studio art, with expertise in sculpture and a variety of 3D materials using multiple tools and applications (e.g., traditional woodworking to found object assemblage, fiber arts, metals such as metalsmithing, welding and/or blacksmithing, and digital fabrication processes), and one year or more of college-level teaching experience by the start date of employment. The position duties include a course load of 4/4 with a focus on pedagogy at the beginning and intermediate levels. Successful applicants will be expected to: contribute thoughtfully to the school’s 3D foundations curriculum; innovate at instruction of nonmajors and majors in studio art; collaborate with faculty across the studio art program on curriculum and studio issues; and sustain a positive working relationship with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and the broader Columbia, South Carolina arts community. Research activities are not required.
The successful candidate will collaborate with studio art faculty on 3D curriculum development, and support delivery of the curriculum across multiple courses in 3-dimensional design. Teaching responsibilities may involve mentoring of graduate student teaching assistants and service on graduate thesis committees. Opportunities exist to collaborate with faculty to develop new courses in 3D studies and sculpture; however, the primary responsibility of the position is to revise, continually develop, and effectively teach foundational courses.
