This position is a critical member of the Des Moines LeMar Plant Leadership Team and specifically oversees all
engineering and detailing personnel and duties. This position leads the quoting, design and detailing of high-quality
structural products for our customers in an ethical, focused, and professional manner.
Essential Job Functions & Expected Outcomes: Your Accountabilities in the Role

  1. Design Process & Project Management
    1. Lead and coordinate all work related to the structural design, analysis, layout and detailing of projects to ensure all codes and standards are adhered to in all products sold by BGS Des Moines.
    2. Ensures a gated design process is used while keeping a master project list to communicate progress.
    3. Lead and coordinate the creation and development of new structural designs that will meet or exceed customer and regulatory needs.
    4. Coordinates and supports prototype construction and validates the product to ensure it meets design and cost specifications.
    5. Communicates with all internal departments and teams to ensure all design project goals, deadlines, and deliverables are achieved.
    6. Ensures that all project timelines and deadlines are adhered to in order to ensure no delays are caused by the engineering and detailing teams.
    7. Lead and coordinate the scheduling and forecasting of all projects (production and non-production).

  1. Sales and Customer Support
    1. Coordinates the onsite or in field support to customers and sales team with product presentations, technical service and installation techniques that will meet or exceed the service and brand promise.
    2. Directs and supports the activities for product documentation, manuals, sales presentations/tools and technical literature to ensure product features and benefits are accurately documented.
    3. Supports and participates in the product training for sales and customer service to enhance the teams' technical knowledge of product performance, features and benefits.

  1. Leadership and Supervision
    1. In coordination with the Plant Manager and other leadership, ensure that the goals, vision and plans of BGS Des Moines, Brock Grain Systems, and CTB, Inc are achieved and a focal point of all decisions.
    2. Ensure a robust succession plan is in place to prevent any gaps in knowledge, ability and training.
    3. Work closely with all other department leaders to ensure a seamless value stream is maintained throughout the entire process, from Quote to Ship.

The job criteria may include other duties, responsibilities and activities, which may change or be assigned at any item with or without notice.
Position Requirements:
  1. Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering with Post-Grad degree preferred.
  2. Experience: 5 years of structural steel design with "hands on" experience of direct project and/or team management and leadership.
  3. Certification(s): PE Licensure required.
  4. Functional Skills: Solid understanding of structural analysis, structural steel design (AISC 360 and 341), and knowledge of codes (International Building Code, ASCE 7, OSHA 1910). Ability to lead a team of engineers and detailers in all aspects required: deadlines, individual growth, training, career paths, quality, etc.
  5. Technology Aptitude/Skills : Knowledge and previous training in 3D structural analysis software, preferably RISA; experience in AutoCAD, Microsoft Suite and Autodesk Inventor.
  6. Language Skills: Ability to read, write, and communicate in English with strong presentation, verbal and written skills.

Physical Requirements to Perform Essential Functions:
  • Ability to sit at desk for 5 hours per day
  • Ability to operate keyboard and view computer screen for majority of day 6-7 hours
  • Ability to write ideas/information in a logical flow for 5 hours per day
  • Ability to read and respond on an on-going basis daily due to nature of the work, throughout the day
  • Ability to communicate with others via phone, in-person, and virtually
  • Ability to listen to customers, problem-solve, and respond accordingly
  • Ability to instruct and/or operate basic hand or power tools
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, kneel, squat, twist, climb, and carry and lift to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to climb Grain Bins & Catwalks with heights of up to 150 ft (with safety gear) may also be required on occasion for troubleshooting and problem solving while on-site
Environmental Conditions & Travel:
  • The employee is primarily exposed to a normal office environment with moderate noise. The employee is occasionally required to wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment while visiting manufacturing departments or client locations.
  • This position may face inclement weather conditions when traveling.
  • Travel: Up to 10% may be required (with the possibility for international)
