Location: Brussels, Belgium (hybrid working)

Full-time: 37.5 hours per week

Contract: 6 months fixed-term, with possibility to extend for a further 6 months

Salary: A “convention d’immersion professionnelle” paid internship, €1,200 per month

BirdLife Europe & Central Asia works to conserve birds and biodiversity by focusing on species, sites and habitats, ecological sustainability and engagement of people. Based in Brussels, we are supported by 46 Partners from 44 countries, including in all EU Member states.

We are looking for a Policy Intern to join our Europe Policy team. In this role you will be supporting the Policy Manager and Nature Restoration Policy Officer in carrying out their different missions related to nature conservation and restoration, with particular attention to connectivity of protected areas and climate resilience.

How you will do this:

  • Maintaining up to date knowledge of the relevant topics, carrying out literature reviews where required and helping the team with policy analysis;
  • Supporting the Policy Officers in formulating, drafting and disseminating BirdLife positions, recommendations and other internal or external documents (e.g. articles, social media messages);
  • Supporting the Policy Officers in developing and promoting relevant project deliverables, in particular related to connectivity of protected areas;
  • Liaising with key players from the EU institutions and other stakeholders, notably other NGOs, to gather information, including attending relevant meetings and taking minutes;
  • Supporting the organisation of different events such as webinars, in-person meetings or public events.
  • Any additional, relevant tasks that will help contribute to the Policy team's objectives.

Ideally you will have:

  • A relevant academic degree (Bachelor or Master 1 in Political Science or Nature Conservation or Environmental Sciences).
  • A genuine knowledge and interest in nature protection and restoration, also in relation to the wider societal context.
  • At least a basic knowledge of and interest in the operation of EU institutions.
  • Capability of understanding and presenting, in written form, the key scientific, economic and legal dimensions of the relevant topics.
  • Fluent written and spoken English, with fluency in other EU languages being considered an advantage.
