POSITION SUMMARY
This position serves as senior Security Officer. Patrols the facilities and grounds; assists with the welfare and safety of personnel and patients; investigates critical incidents; assists employees, patients, and visitors; interfaces with emergency response agencies; secures doors; monitors parking and traffic control. Performs assigned security duties promptly and accurately. Works varied assignments and shifts. Provides guidance to less experienced officers and assists Security leadership with additional duty assignments requiring an experienced Security Officer, such as but limited to, training, documentation, special investigations, sensitive duty assignments, and serving in a leadership role when a Supervisor or Lead officer is not present.
CORE FUNCTIONS
Draws upon expertise gained through time in service to resolve complex customer service issues.
Responds to all emergency codes for assistance and control and, if the most senior officer present, takes charge of the situation until/unless relieved by a Supervisor or Lead Officer. Patrols and inspects facility frequently to assist in maintaining a safer and more secure environment. Actively assists employees with security related matters, mediate disputes, conduct and lead interviews, conduct searches, enforce parking regulations and traffic control, and performs special assignments per the request of Security Leadership. Serves as a security subject matter expert.
Demonstrates mastery and leads medical staff in restraining and handling troubled/combative patients. Utilizes applicable experience to de-escalate potentially violent situations and provide assistance to junior officers. Demonstrates exceptional knowledge of security policies and adherence thereto. Patrols unoccupied areas and sets the alarms when appropriate. Locks and unlocks facility doors at prescribed times. Conducts money pick-ups from departments, logs pick-ups and successfully delivers the contents to the appropriate destination department. Releases bodies from the morgue, ensuring that all paperwork is complete. Checks alarms to ensure they are in proper working order and demonstrates the ability to identify and correct alarm issues. Demonstrates proficiency in the submission of work order requests. Escorts patients, visitors, and employees when required for security purposes. Leads, plans, and participates in security lead training designated for staff.
Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations and serves as a resource on such matters to junior officers and other staff members. Effectively guides fellow officers and demonstrates the ability to take charge of such situations when/if a Supervisor or Lead Officer is not present. Serve as an education resource on policies, procedures, training, tactics, and proper application thereof to junior officers.
Appropriately and effectively utilizes assigned non-lethal weapon according to policy and training and demonstrates expert knowledge of such equipment including trouble shooting, maintenance, and the ability to instruct others on proper use and application
Investigates and completes exceptionally well-written written reports of complaints, critical security incidents and unusual activities involving patients, employees and visitors. Maintains an accurate log of all relevant security activities during each shift. Performs "citizen arrest" and demonstrate critical thinking skills during extremely stressful situations as needed. Professionally testifies in criminal court, state hearings, and review boards when required.
Based on area of assignment may assist in the maintenance and preservation of confidential health documents including scanning into electronic patient health information systems.
Undertakes special assignments and investigations that require advanced knowledge and expertise commiserate with an experienced healthcare security officer per the direction of Security Leadership.
Position reports directly to the Security Supervisor, Security Lead Officer or Officer in Charge (OIC) and in their absence and may be called upon to serve in the capacity of an OIC. External customers are law enforcement agencies and emergency service agencies. This position is system wide and officers may be assigned to work at any facility as needed. This position will provide guidance and direction to staff, visitors, and patients during a security emergency and draw upon his/her experience to provide guidance to fellow officers. This position will be required to proactively identify, deter, and respond to security incidents and supplement Security Leadership as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's license and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
Knowledge, skills and abilities as normally obtained through Three years of continuous service in a security officer role or equivalent experience. Must possess the ability to make accurate observations and exercise good independent judgment in a variety of situations (including emergencies). Must successfully complete Banner Health Basic Officer Academy. Must demonstrate extraordinary interpersonal skills and be customer service oriented in all contacts with patients, visitors, and staff. Must maintain required security certifications. Must resent a professional appearance and demeanor at all times and must possess strong verbal communication skills. Must qualify and maintain proficiency with assigned non-lethal weapons. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform physical requirements of the position. Capabilities will be demonstrated through the successful completion of similarly related skills testing. Employees hired on or after January 1, 2019 will need to successfully demonstrate the physical requirements before starting in the role. Employees hired before January 1, 2019 must be able to successfully demonstrate the physical requirements by December 31, 2019. If upon initial evaluation, an employee is unable to successfully demonstrate the physical requirements, there will be a quarterly assessment administered. This physical skills assessment will then be conducted on an annual basis and employees must successfully meet the requirements to remain in role.
Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous law enforcement, military, or hospital security experience preferred.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
