Helena Public Schools is Hiring a School Counselor Near Montana, MT

Position Title: Counselor – K-12
Reports To: Building Administrator

At Helena Public Schools, our vision is to foster dynamic educational experiences that prepare all students for life. As a High School Counselor, you will work as part of a team that serves 8,000 students at 18 campuses across Helena. These positions serve a 187 day contract scheduled for 7 hours a day. Current starting salary range is $47,857 to $58,261 depending upon education level and applicable experience. The District provides a comprehensive benefit package which includes: retirement plan, sick and personal leave, tuition reimbursement, health insurance with dental and vision coverage, life insurance, long term disability insurance, a section 125 plan and numerous tax sheltered annuities (403b's).

Who we are looking for:
To become part of this dedicated team, you have a Class six (6) Montana Specialist Certificate with a school counselor endorsement.
The ideal candidate will possess multiple endorsement areas, and at least a year of successful experience in an high school counseling.

SUMMARY: Utilizing leadership, advocacy and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventive services and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic career and personal / social development for all students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.

  • Plans, organizes and delivers the district counseling program
  • Implements the district guidance curriculum through the use of effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured group sessions for all students
  • Implements the individual planning component by guiding individuals and groups of students and their parents or guardians through the development of educational and career plans
  • Provides responsive services through their effective use of individual and small-group counseling, consultation and referral skills
  • Provides system support through effective school counseling program management and support for other educational programs
  • Discusses the counseling department management system and the program action plans with the school administrator
  • Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis
  • Monitors the students on a regular basis as they progress in school
  • Uses time and calendars to implement an efficient program
  • Develops a results evaluation for the program
  • Conducts a yearly program audit
  • Is a student advocate, leader, collaborator and systems change agent

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree (M. A.) in Guidance and Counseling; a Master's degree with equivalent graduate level school counseling content; or an endorsement from an accredited program.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Class six (6) Montana Specialist Certificate

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, students, parents and/or guardians, and the school community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Trustee policies.
