TITLE: Literacy Specialist
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Masters in Reading and/or ISBE State Certification (03) with 18 hours of
coursework in the diagnosis and remediation of disabilities for reading endorsement
2. Minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience preferred
3. EL Certification preferred
JOB GOAL: To provide reading interventions in small group settings, individualized student instruction, organize and assist in benchmark testing, progress monitoring of students, evaluate the effectiveness of student interventions, adjust teaching strategies according to student needs
REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Support teachers in the instruction of students with varied abilities to facilitate transfer
between classroom and small group instruction.
2. Apply a deep understanding of reading and writing instruction and best practice in reading to
classroom/small group settings.
3. Implement the RTI process with fidelity including full understanding of the expectations at the
Universal/Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 levels and provide support to staff.
4. Assist with benchmark assessments; interpret reading research and pertinent student data to
explain findings to a variety of audiences, including student data meetings.
5. Provide professional development and support to building or district staff in areas of literacy.
6. Manage building instructional resources and provide appropriate materials to support
differentiation and varying student needs.
7. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with administrators, teachers, other school
staff and parents to strengthen all aspects of the instructional program.
8. Support practices of growth mindset to support a positive culture and climate in the building.
9. Attend literacy collaboration meetings to increase instructional capacity.
10. Participate in professional development, research, reading and inquiry sessions to stay abreast
of developments in best classroom practices, technology and assessment.
11. Perform other duties and assume responsibilities as may be assigned by the superintendent or
designee and in accordance with terms stipulated in the current contract.
