La Esperanza is seeking a detail-oriented Immigration Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in case management and possess strong organizational skills. The Immigration Assistant supports DOJ Accredited Representatives in their work representing clients applying for immigration benefits, providing general counsel on immigration law, and providing community outreach and presentations. The Immigration Assistant also provides support in managing client follow-up, phone calls, referrals, and scheduling appointments. La Esperanza is a nonprofit and a DOJ-recognized organization, and the Immigration Assistant would have the opportunity to work towards their own DOJ Accreditation, which would allow them to represent clients at a DOJ-recognized organization.
Requirements
· Fully bilingual English/Haitian Creole (Spanish is a plus).
· Bachelor’s degree in related field, i.e., Human Services, Social Work, Criminal Justice.
· 1 years’ experience working in case management or one-to-one support services.
· Experience working with diverse communities.
Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities
· Excellent communication, oral/written, and computer (MS Office 365) skills.
· Establish/maintain effective working relationships with clients.
· Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work effectively and sensitively with individuals and families and maintain confidentiality.
· Ability to work effectively with peers and volunteers.
Responsibilities
· Provide immigrant clients with general information on immigration questions.
· Explain and/or interpret United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Refugee Resettlement, National Visa Center, and Immigration Court documents.
· Assist in the completion and proper filing of petitions and applications to USCIS and NVC for immigrant clients.
· Assist in the organization and maintenance of client files in office and electronically in database.
· Assist with data entry and management.
· Provide referrals to immigration attorneys or other organizations that help with immigration work when necessary.
· Assist in the planning and execution of community education sessions and outreach to provide general immigration law and rights education.
· Schedule appointments for the Immigration Department and Attorneys.
· Make appointment reminder phone calls.
· Participate in meetings/trainings as required by supervisor.
· Prepare and submit all required reports/paperwork within established time frames.
Other Duties
· Participate in internal and external activities as directed.
· Complete other tasks given by supervisor.
