Minimum QualificationsLocated a ½ mile from the Atlantic Ocean and 15 minutes from Portland, Old Orchard Beach School District is an 660-student district seeking a Director of Special Education to join our administrative team and to lead the district in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of effective instructional programs that result in high achievement and appropriate educational programming for all students with disabilities. RSU 23 is looking for a relentless, results oriented individual to lead this work. The successful candidate should possess the following:
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa
  • Master's Degree in Education from an accredited college or university;
  • State of Maine Administrator of Special Education certification (030).
  • A minimum of five (5) years teaching experience or equivalent experience;
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Successful experience in supervising special education staff and establishing and supervising special education programming
  • Working knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • The ability to articulate effectively, both orally and in writing, the successes and needs of the special education program with the school board, central administration, staff, students, parents, and the general public - in large and small groups and with individuals.
  • The ability to relate positively to staff and the public; a view of the community/school relationship as a partnership; recognition of the need to be accessible to parents and understanding the importance of advocating for children with disabilities.
  • The ability to recognize department staffing needs, to perceive in candidates the potential for suitability, and to contribute to an effective recruitment/selection/retention process.
  • The ability to supervise and evaluate staff and all activities through knowledge and the commitment to contribute to the improvement of instruction and the effectiveness of programs in general.
  • Informed of all current legal requirements governing special education, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (504), at both the State and Federal level
  • Ability to evaluate existing programs and to develop new programs as students’ needs dictate
  • Facilitate and support the development and implementation of research-based instructional programs, materials, and/or methods.
  • Evaluate and recommend new instructional materials, methods, and programs, as appropriate.
  • Provide leadership and support to principals and building leadership teams in the coordination and alignment of effective research-based programs.
  • Oversee, monitor, and support the academic team and other District resources to ensure alignment of school programs with the District vision.
  • Facilitate professional development for teachers and staff by identifying best practices in the educational literature and designing appropriate training opportunities based on that knowledge.
  • Collaborate with building Principals and classroom teachers to support professional growth and engagement of school leaders.
  • Assist with the preparation and administration of the instructional accounts of the school budget.
  • Review the effectiveness and efficiency in the use of District resources and make appropriate recommendations to Superintendent.
  • Focus and align resources to support achievement of the District’s mission and vision.
  • The ability to effectively and efficiently utilize and manage special education services through responsible stewardship of school district resources.
  • The ability to recognize department staffing needs, to perceive in candidates the potential for suitability, and to contribute to an effective recruitment/selection/retention process.
