ROLE DESCRIPTION
Dean of Humanities
The Humanities Dean is responsible for the leadership and oversight of Valor’s Humanities faculty and the Bible, English, History, World Language, and Business departments. The Humanities Dean is responsible for planning, guiding, and overseeing the instructional, curricular, and co-curricular activities of the Humanities in alignment with Valor’s mission of preparing tomorrow’s leaders to transform the world for Christ.

Curriculum Advancement
  • Partner with the Associate Head of School, Academic Planning Team, Academic Leadership Team, and faculty in ensuring that Valor’s academic goals and standards are defined and promoted within and across departments
  • Coordinate the review, development, digitization, and revision of all Humanities curriculum documents including department outcomes, course outcomes, curriculum guides, course scope and sequence, assessments, and lesson plans
  • Provide support and guidance to faculty members regarding the curriculum review process and the pursuit of exceptional Valor curricular standards
  • Ensure that all faculty within the Humanities departments seamlessly and deliberately integrate Biblical truth and Christian values into curriculum and instruction 
  • Responsible for ensuring Humanities faculty develop and analyze consistent assessments across courses and appropriate vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum with student outcomes
Faculty Observations and Development
  • Responsible for the oversight and development of Humanities faculty including observations, evaluations, goal setting aligned with the department operating plan, midyear reviews, and end-of-year reviews
  • Function as a resource and provide coaching toward meaningful instructional techniques designed to engage a variety of learning styles and promote critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and innovation
  • Assist the Director of Academics, the primary hiring agent in hiring, training, mentoring, and supporting Humanities faculty members
  • Facilitate the onboarding of new faculty members and promote a successful transition to the Valor culture and community
  • Oversee and provide department-specific professional development opportunities and coaching in collaboration with Humanities Department Chairs
  • Provide support and guidance to faculty members regarding behavioral or academic challenges of students
Strategic Planning and Collaboration Across Academic Departments
  • Develop a yearly Humanities Strategic Plan that sets priorities, advances the work of the departments, addresses the needs of students, and ensures work toward the overall Academic Strategic Plan 
  • Serve as a conduit of interdisciplinary collaboration and programming across the Bible, English, and History Departments
  • Analyze student-performance data and implement specific strategies to address curriculum or instructional areas in need of improvement
  • Engage in ongoing communication and collaboration with Valor team members in order to strengthen student performance and support within the Humanities
  • In collaboration with the STEM Dean, provide support and leadership of the academic elements of accreditation
Communication between Faculty and Administration
  • Serve as the communication liaison between faculty and administration. Participate in open dialogue with members of Humanities departments, Department Chairs, and administrators to ensure that gaps are filled in with knowledge and trust is promoted 
  • Facilitate Humanities department meetings with key stakeholders that promote participation from team members and keep meetings focused on curriculum, needs of students, and best teaching practices
  • Seek counsel and meet regularly with the Director of Academics and other school leadership members
Leadership and Oversight of Humanities Departments
  • Execute the annual Humanities operational plan and long-term strategic plan
  • Manage an approved annual budget dedicated to Humanities departments
  • Collaborate with Valor Marketing and Branding to maintain the website, newsletters, and communications pertaining to the Humanities and the academic program
  • Provide support and direction for the Department Chairs within the Humanities Departments. 
Collaboration and Communication with the School Leadership Team
  • As a member of the Cabinet leadership team, the Dean of Humanities is particularly responsible for defining, cultivating and leading our Christian community. Cabinet leaders must not only comply with standards but also affirm additional distinctive Christian beliefs of our community in the Christian Community Policy or otherwise as determined by the board of directors. 
  • Work collaboratively with Cabinet leaders in Arts, Athletics, Discovery, Student Life, and Spiritual Formation to discuss and provide action on critical issues facing the school and to engage the community in school-wide initiatives that propel the school forward in alignment with a distinctively Christian mission and vision
  • Serve as the communication liaison between faculty and Cabinet leadership team. Participate in open dialogue with team members to ensure that gaps are filled in with knowledge and trust is promoted across pillar areas
  • Seek counsel and meet regularly with the Associate Head of School and other Cabinet leadership members
  • Periodically engage with the board of directors to seek input on strategic planning and provide monthly information about the work of the academic department

  • Humanities programming will provide cohesive partnerships and collaboration with various stakeholders.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a Humanities discipline and an advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in curriculum development, design and review
  • Solid biblical and theological foundation and understanding
  • Full understanding of and alignment with the Valor culture
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Desire to teach and/or experience within Christian education
