POSITION:
Vision Rehabilitation Therapist
CLASSIFICATION:
Full-time Regular
Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Manager of Rehabilitation Services, is responsible for rehabilitation in daily living skills, adaptive communication skills, and functional low vision assessments and training to persons who have visual impairment and/or multiple disabilities.
Essential functions:
  1. Assess the rehabilitative needs, current functional level and capabilities of each client assigned, and trains the necessary skills.
  2. Completes all required and requested written documentation of services as scheduled as well as all other paperwork required by the department.
  3. Participates as a member of the rehabilitation team in staffing or required meetings to review the client’s progress and goals to appropriate staff. 
  4. Writes Individualized Training Plan (ITP) and recommendations for adaptive devices for each client.
  5. Maintain current standards of professional growth by attending professional workshops and conferences as approved by the supervisor.
  6. Keep abreast of new developments in the field through professional reading and membership in professional organizations.
  7. Keep in close contact with the consumer, families and interested parties of the merits and limitations of rehabilitation teaching, including devices and technologies.
  8. Does community presentations to professionals or clients in the community.
  9. Performs other related duties upon request of the Supervisor
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Excellent oral and written communication.
  2. Ability to be self-directed.
  3. Ability to teach adults and relate well to people with multiple disabilities.
  4. Ability to develop curricula, assess the client’s needs and use various teaching strategies in teaching of techniques that will foster independence such as: Braille, touch typing, adaptive handwriting, modified time telling techniques, money identification, assess the need for issuance of and the training with basic low vision devices, safe techniques of kitchen management and cooking; all aspects of homemaking and home maintenance; personal grooming; care and maintenance of clothes; identification of clothing, food and other household material; note-taking, use of large print, taped and Braille resources; use of some adaptive electronic devices and equipment. 
  5. Excellent and effective communication skills (verbal and written). 
  6. Knowledge of common eye conditions.
  7. Knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act is helpful.
  8. Must possess the ability to perform well in both a collaborative, team environment and independently. 
  9. Superb organizational skills.
  10. Effective public speaking skills. 
  11. Proficient computer literacy.
  12. The skills to assess the need for, the issuance of, and the training with basic low vision devices, which include but are not limited to a variety of devices, such as stand and hand-held magnifiers, strong magnifying reading glasses, loupes, and small telescopes.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years of rehabilitation teaching preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree with a major in rehabilitation teaching of persons who have a visual impairment and/or are ACVREP certified or certifiable.
Equipment/Tools Used:
  • Personal computer; software including Word, Excel, Outlook.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and have the ability to stand, sit, bend, and type for long periods of time. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required. Employee must have the ability to go out in the community to make home, employer, and library, etc. visits to, with, or on behalf of clients. 
Once hired, the employee must have reliable transportation. Employee/ driver must have current and sufficient automobile insurance and an acceptable driving record.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
