POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Nursing Education will execute and implements nursing education across the clinical entities of DHR Health by providing staff development and expertise. The individual oversees a minimum of five (5) full time employees’ on the DHR Health campus. The position reports directly to Senior Vice President of Education and Career Development. This individual will exercise leadership responsibility over the practice of Nursing Education at DHR Health. The role/function requires the Director of Nursing Education to function as an educator, consultant, facilitator, innovator, change agent, leader, and researcher. Each role supports the development of the bedside nurse, and fosters empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence through their delivery of evidence–based nursing practice. This occurs through the facilitation of the educational process through assessment, development, planning, implementation and evaluation of competency assessment; continuing education and leadership development. In addition, as a role model of the professional behavior, the Director of Nursing Education is instrumental creating a professional nursing climate within DHR Health to meet the needs of the diverse nursing units throughout the hospital. Travel may be required to facilitate collaboration with Directors, and Clinical Coordinators of all in-patient departments and Women’s hospital. The Director of Nursing Education will work collaboratively with Nursing Leadership to provide education and mentoring to the RN-Residents, Nurse Techs, RN Apprentice’s, and HPU-Nurses.

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An RN License, BSN required, MSN preferred
  • A master’s Degree in Nursing, if not present on hiring, to be obtained with 3 years from date of hire
  • A current license/valid Registered Nurse permit to practice in the State of Texas
  • Candidate must possess proficiency in the English language
  • Regulatory agency requirement concerning educational activities within a hospital
  • Principles and practices of effective management and supervision
  • Methods, theories and techniques used in an acute care nursing and ancillary healthcare staff education
  • Medical terminology, hospital routines, procedures and equipment
  • Current developments in nursing and ancillary healthcare professionals
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS, and /or NRP Instructor level certification is preferred, BLS Instructor certification required.

    JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

    • Three (3) years of applied clinical expertise as an RN in a health related field or as a Nursing Educator or instructor.
    • Five (5) years relevant experience in an administrative capacity in an academic healthcare setting or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
    • Knowledge and understanding of The Joint Commission, Medicare and Medicaid guidelines and regulations.
    • Basic Computer Skills in Microsoft Office
    • Regulatory agency requirement concerning educational activities within a hospital
    • Principles and practices of effective management and supervision
    • Methods, theories and techniques used in an acute care nursing and ancillary healthcare staff education

      Responsibilities:

      POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices.
      • Directs and coordinates all educational activities within the DHR Health.
      • Establishes and implements a broad range of educational programs, including orientation workshops, seminars, in-services and conferences.
      • Develops a variety of instructional materials for training programs and classes, including audio visual, printed video tapes, etc., and conducts same throughout DHR Health.
      • Arranges for individuals outside the hospital to conduct training programs and seminars for DHR Health personnel.
      • Defines and assesses quality improvement programs; assures compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies with regard to educational activities.
      • Manage the education program operating budget; prepares and submits request for capital expenditures
      • Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates and recommends disciplinary actions for subordinate staff
      • Develop policies and procedures in accordance with administrative and regulatory agency directives
      • Prepares administrative reports and correspondence concerning educational activities and directs the maintenance of records documentation and files.

        Employees must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirement relative to his or her age.

        B. Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.

        C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
