EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Under the direction of the building principal, the Literacy Teacher is responsible for creating a learning environment that fosters, promotes, and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy literacy practices. This position will plan and implement instructional lessons and activities that guide students in developing the skills and knowledge needed to become proficient readers and writers. The Literacy Teacher works collaboratively with other staff to ensure all students meet educational standards.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Representative Duties: Assists struggling students to improve their literacy skills Collaborates with teachers in all grade levels to promote the learning and implementation of best practices in literacy instruction Helps lead school-wide efforts to improve literacy instruction Creates and examines data to measure the success of literacy programs and instruction. Creates, with assistance of pupils, an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, study skills and other elements of the course of study specified by Sequim School District.Cooperatively sets performance objectives appropriate to the interest and maturity levels of students.Communicates with parents through a variety of means: parent conferences when needed to discuss the individual pupil's progress and interpret the school program.Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve problems of mental and physical health, attitude and learning.Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.Determines instructional materials designed to achieve goals and performance objectives appropriate to the interest and maturity level of student.Instructs pupils in proper care and use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection, dependent upon size and facility available.Evaluates student's academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress reports, and communicates with parents on the individual pupil's progress.Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide a productive learning environment.Supervises pupils in previously specified out-of-classroom activities during the workday.Participates in staff meetings, curriculum, and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level.Plans and coordinates the work of teacher assistants, volunteers, and paraprofessionals where applicable.Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with district testing program.Organizes storage areas and controls use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection, dependent upon size and facility available.Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities.Prepares classroom materials appropriate to meet the needs of the students.Prepares instructional plans for substitutes upon the teacher’s absence.Conditions/Disclaimers The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by those assigned to this position and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills.
