The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is Hiring an Assistant Transportation Manager Near Philadelphia, PA

DescriptionReports to: Transportation Manager
Employment information: Full-time, 12-month, non-union position.
SummaryEnsures the safe transportation of students to and from school and other extracurricular activities every day. Helps Transportation Manager ensures all the routes occur as scheduled by solving any issues that arise for coverage, arranging for maintenance/repairs of PSD vehicles and communicating with families or school districts.Supports staff supervision by communicating job expectations and planning, monitoring, providing feedback to employees on performance, providing feedback to Transportation Manager for annual staff evaluations. Filling in wherever needed to fulfill the department objective of transporting students to and from school safely every day.
Duties And ResponsibilitiesSpecific duties include but are not limited to:
  • Direct activities relating to dispatching, routing and tracking all PSD and all outside PSD school district vehicles per contract
  • Serve as transportation contact person for all drivers, monitors and families, school districts, LEAs, provider agencies regarding schedule and operations
  • Update student home addresses with LEA and communicate with LEAs regarding updating bus routes
  • Carry and install car seats into buses and vans.
  • Develop route schedules, assign staff for contracted daily runs and for all extra-curricular activities such as; (ASP) After School Programs, (FNL) Friday Night Live, class trips, and athletic events.
  • Communicate with outside districts regarding after school program transportation. If a student is not picked up on time, arrange for transportation supervision of students until the outside district picks up the student.
  • Monitor staff credentials, including driving record/license status, and report to School Districts/PennDOT as required.
  • Arrange for necessary drug/alcohol testing for all new transportation staff, plus random follow-up testing as required.
  • Maintain records for all PSD owned vehicles and buses.
  • Arrange for preventative maintenance and repairs of all PSD owned vehicles.
  • Participate in interviews for applicants, onboard and train new employees.
  • Facilitate staff meetings for transportation staff with Transportation Manager or to run meetings in absence of Transportation Manager as needed.
  • Provide backup support for the Transportation Manager with the payroll system.
  • Coordinate/facilitate ongoing training for the transportation department.
  • Work with the Transportation Manager to evaluate staff for annual evaluations
  • Provide performance feedback to employees.
  • Submit staff/student incident reports. Follow up with staff to ensure incident reports are submitted the same day of any incidents on the bus.
  • In coordination with other departments, develop procedures that insure safety and efficiency.
  • Provide back-up coverage for emergencies and coverage for Transportation Manager in case of absence.
  • Backup support for supervision of students who have not yet been picked up by non-PSD transportation (outside school districts/intermediate units) after athletics and after school programs.
  • Backup coverage for drivers on PSD school and after school routes as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
RequirementsQualifications:
  • A combination of previous work experience in management and/or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university is preferred.
  • Required to possess a valid Driver’s License. Possess or being willing to apply/qualify for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with all appropriate endorsements is preferred.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods of transporting students in a safe and efficient manner and as per the Philadelphia School District regulations and other applicable Intermediate Unit/Agency requirements.
  • Background or experience in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of all legal qualifications and requirements for CDL licensure and be aware of all State and Federal school bus transportation safety regulations and best practices.
  • Good communication skills with students, families, staff and school district/agency personnel.
  • Ability to collaborate with other staff members, teams and departments.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Good administrative and management skills to allocate resources, and must be able to demonstrate good leadership skills.
  • Ability to or willingness to learn American Sign Language (ASL).
Physical Requirements And Work Environment
  • Frequent bending, standing, sitting, walking, crouching, reaching, stooping and kneeling.
  • Lifting and moving of objects such as car seats
